Visit the most remarkable building in Tibet, the imposing Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enormous in scope, the 13-story structure has been home to the Dalai Lama since the 7th century and stands as Tibet’s most recognizable landmark. It boasts more than 1,000 rooms, including those in the White Palace (former home of the Dalai Lama), Red Palace (devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer) and a total of 10,000 side chapels and shrines. Extended to its present size by the thirteenth Dalai Lama, it covers an area of nearly 300,000 square feet. This incredible building with its vast red-and-white facade sits high on Marpo Ri Hill, visible from all corners of Lhasa. It has been home to his eminence, and served as a monastery and seminary. Much of it today is a museum that you will explore with your guide and peruse on your own.
