Chongqing, Chongqing, China
Perched on steep hills where the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers meet, the mountain city of Chongqing was China’s capital during World War II and one of the Allies. The Chinese Air Force’s American Volunteer Group, known as the Flying Tigers, was based in Chongqing, as was General Joseph Stillwell, famously known as “Vinegar Joe” for his disposition. Today Chongqing, with Manhattan-like skyline, is China’s most important inland city.
