Chongqing, China
Visit a spectacular 12-story pavilion and its adjacent hilltop temple along the Yangtze. Shibaozhai Temple (Precious Stone Fortress), a gem of Chinese architecture, sits atop the rock plateau of Shibaozhai Hill. It stands as one of countless legacies of the Qing Dynasty. In 1819, the towering and fantastical red pavilion was constructed alongside the rock wall. This “Purple Rain Pavilion,” as it was called, was equipped with an interior spiral staircase so visitors could climb to the temple easily. You’re sure to appreciate the pavilion for both its beauty and its function: Before its construction, you would have had to ascend to the temple via an uncomfortable chain lift. Today, upon arrival at the entrance, admire the yellow glazed gate. Upon reaching the top of the sheer cliff at the uppermost Buddhist temple, you can meditate for a spell and gaze upon breathtaking views of the Yangtze.
