Yichang, Hubei, China
Tour China’s massive dam project, decades in the making. You will disembark with your guide for a short drive to the Three Gorges Dam. Originally envisioned by China’s first president Sun Yat-sen, the dam helps control flooding along the Yangtze River, which once regularly destroyed entire villages up and down the river’s shores. The largest hydroelectric power station in the world, this massive project became fully operational to great fanfare in 2011, overcoming years of controversy about the loss of villages, livelihoods and ancient relics along the Yangtze as its waters rose. In addition to flood control, the monumental project produces about one-ninth of the nation’s electricity. Increased water depths upriver allow shipping to extend farther into China’s more remote areas. Throughout your tour, you will marvel at the structure’s scale as you learn about what the Three Gorges Dam project means to the Chinese people and the Yangtze.
