Visit the 1,300-year-old Jokhang Temple, spiritual center of Tibet and the thriving marketplace that surrounds it. The temple was built in 647, and Buddhist pilgrims come from all over the territory and all around the world to visit. Dominating Lhasa’s Barkhor Square, the expansive site is an intriguing blend of Indian vihara, Tang Dynasty and Nepalese design, all topped by a glittering gilded roof. During your visit, you will see the lush temple’s interior illuminated with butter candles. Then, step into Barkhor Market, where you are likely to see pilgrims making reverent clockwise circuits around the temple on their hands and knees. The market’s stalls and shops will also get your attention as they evoke the Tibet of old. Browse the Tibetan prayer flags, jewelry, cloth, traditional Tibetan clothing and many other items. You will have time to explore and perhaps chat with some of the many vendors.
