The adventure is underway. My first two days (just two!?!?) in Ireland have been incredible. What lovely, kind and interesting people. And Dublin! What a fantastic, walkable, clean city bursting with life.
I started my stay at the Westin Dublin, which was a great way to ease into traveling
. Ah the perks of working in luxury hospitality (and good friends who help solidify said perks). I welcomed the beautiful room with a giant, cushy bed with lots of pillows and a heavy down comforter. The food was also great, and being situated across the street from Trinity College was a perfect introduction to the city. Upon arrival at 8 am I forced myself to get out and joined a walking tour of Trinity. So much history! We were also able to see the Book of Kells, one of Ireland's greatest cultural treasures and the world's most famous medieval manuscript, comprising the four gospels of the new testament. After my walk I crashed for about an hour and then peeled myself off the bed to go and eat some dinner. After which I promptly crashed again, this time for a solid nine hours of sleep.
The next morning I got up and walked the city, seeing sights like St. Patrick's cathedral, where it is said Patrick baptized the first pagans into Christianity, Dublin Castle and Ha'Penny Bridge. I stopped at Merchants Arch for a delicious pot of traditional Irish stew (gluten free!) and a half pint of Bulmers Cider. On the topic of gluten, the Irish have their stuff together when it comes to food allergies. Everywhere has GF options, and when I ordered a PSL at Starbucks with soy, the barista informed me that the syrup also had a bit of milk in it, and would I still want it? They are very meticulous. I'm loving it.
After lunch I visited the Leprechaun Museum
. Yes. You read that correctly. I would have never given it a thought, but a friend recommended it. I'm so glad she did. Not the cheesy experience you would anticipate, but rather a beautifully constructed maze of rooms that come to life through projection mapping and professional story tellers, enlightening visitors to the classic fairy tales of Ireland. What a COOL experience.
The little people's tales wore me out, and I still had to check out of the plush Westin and downgrade to a decent little hotel called Blooms. Once getting settled I relaxed and took a bit of downtime before meeting a group of ladies for dinner. A good friend from work had put my in contact with her friends that were currently visiting family over here and it was a pleasure having good conversation and good food with friendly faces! The ladies had a busy next day, so we parted ways and I explored the Temple Bar neighborhood outside of my new digs. I found excellent Celtic music and met some new friends while there. We had a great night getting to know Dublin and I went to bed worn out and heart happy. I have a feeling Dublin and I will be friends for quite awhile.
Now on to Belfast!
