Michael Jackson Day

Ko Phangan, Surat Thani, Thailand
We decided to brave the steep, lethal road to Haad Rin by moped but we heard a horn beeping as Shane and Alex pulled up behind us on the way. They had already been to the beach but had decided to go in search of a different beach as it was filthy. I guess the 'Full Moon Party' isn't great for everything! We never actually saw 'Sunrise Beach' during the day as we only went there on New Year. We found another little beach close by called Haad Leela. There were some cool looking bungalows set back from the beach and there were wooden sun-beds scattered around the place, so we took up the offer. They also had a nice cocktail bar on the beach but unfortunately the only CD they owned, or played, was Michael Jackson. This kind of spoiled the tranquility of the place, as we all lay reading a good book! Shane played volleyball with a random mix of people and on numerous occasions the ball almost knocked the head off an unhappy sunbather! We heard a loud bang and it turned out that a coconut had fallen from a rather tall palm tree and had landed inches away from a girl sunbathing on the beach!

It was getting close to sunset so we walked to the end of the beach where there was a wooden boardwalk, which led to a little hippy bar where we had nothing other than a Chang . We had a slow walk back along the beach which was deserted by this point and the sun was just setting, so it was a picture perfect moment. On the way back to our moped we called off at a 'Heavy Weight Gym', where the sign said it all, "Separates boy from the men!" It was basically a few pieces of really old-skool gym equipment and wooden playground items, such as a see-saw. We got back to Greenpeace and had an afternoon snooze, followed by an "authentic" Italian pizza which didn't quite have the authentic taste we were expecting, as it tasted like a 'Tesco Value' pizza, or so I imagine as I have never actually sampled one myself.
