Ko Samui, Thailand
We had a nice peaceful morning at 'Sunshine 2' where we ate Frosties for breakfast on our veranda. We rented a moped and drove to Mae Had to use the internet. However, I started to feel a bit faint so we left the internet shop and stopped at a little bakery for a drink. We were just about to leave the bakery when I started to get a tingling sensation all up the back of my neck and into my head, so we had to rush to the nearest clinic. I had to be put on a drip and I was given an oxygen mask as the doctor suspected it was a mild case of decompression sickness. As I was put into a small room and left on my own Andrew had to make the trip back to our bungalow to collect our insurance card. We then had to wait two hours for the Seatran ferry to Ko Samui to go to the hospital. I had to lie there on the ferry, still attached to a drip and an oxygen mask, for all to see! I got a bit of a temperature during the journey so the nurse shoved some paracetamol down my neck. Another person joined us on the ferry, also attached to a drip and rather drugged up. He had an infection in his testicle, which he was more than happy to share with everyone. The nurse had difficulty keeping him under control as he stumbled out onto the deck for a cigarette. Once we arrived at the pier there was an ambulance waiting to take us to Bangkok-Samui Hospital. I was taken to the A&E department and a diving specialist doctor came to talk to me. He explained that my symptoms weren't specific enough so although it may have been decompression sickness it may well have been something else. He decided it would be best to run the usual tests to check for any sign of infection. I was then taken to my own private room and they took a blood and a urine sample. I had to remain on the oxygen mask during the night and was given a sleeping pill, which certainly worked as I drifted off straight away.
