The quest for an open temple...

Bangkok, Thailand
We had planned a full day of walking around Bangkok to do some more sightseeing, but we didn't plan on walking right into a 'Red Shirt' protest at the Democracy Monument! I felt a little uneasy as there seemed to be no other tourists around, but plenty of armed police. It seemed to go on forever but we made it out of the other side and headed to the 'Golden Mount' temple. However, it turned out to be a Buddhist Holiday so no temples were actually open to the general public. We continued walking and passed the amulet market where they also sold a gift you could pass onto a monk, which consisted of an orange bucket filled with daily essential items, such as tea and toothpaste. We then passed Sao Ching Cha, also known as the 'Giant Swing' which is a large, wooden structure that is 25 metres tall. Men used to strap themselves to the swing and attempt to swing high enough to grab a bag full of money that was attached to the top, using their teeth. This was outlawed as a number of people died in the process! We then returned to Rambhuttri Road and followed it over to the other side of the road, which led to a quaint little section with pretty street lights and restaurants spilling out onto the pavement. We then went down to the riverside walkway where the Rama VIII bridge was visible. We treat ourselves to another Pad Thai from a street food vendor before bed.
