Wat Mahathat

Ayutthaya, Thailand
We checked out of our 'Boutique Room' and went to 'Tony's Place' for breakfast. We were planning on travelling to Chiang Mai on the overnight sleeper train, so we took the ferry over the river to go and book a ticket at the Train Station. The journey proved pointless in the end as they had no 1st class sleeper tickets available for days and if we went 2nd class we would have had to sleep in a different carriage to each other. We got the ferry back across the river and found a cheaper place to stay another night in Ayutthaya, originally called 'Ayutthaya Guesthouse', which was on farang street. As we couldn't get a train we had to book a bus ticket to Chiang Mai instead.

We then set off to explore one of the old temple ruins, Wat Mahathat, but we were held up by a huge street parade . There were a number of elephants wearing traditional Thai costume and the people were all dressed in red for the 'Chinese New Year' celebration. We were given a baseball cap and were splashed with water for good luck, by the people parading past us as we stood at the roadside. We continued walking, as the parade was never ending, and we eventually reached the temple in a sweaty mess as it was a scorching day. The temple ruins were unreal. The heads of most of the Buddhas were missing, which made it all look a bit strange. One of the Buddha heads had become surrounded and entangled in the roots of a bodhi tree, which made an awesome photo. Once we had finished walking around the temple complex we walked through the adjoining park.

We arrived back at farang street and went to 'Tony's Place' for a burger. We spent a few hours chilling before returning to our guesthouse to get a shower. We then walked to the street market to eat. Andrew opted for the ultimate Pad Thai but half way through he dropped a chopstick and refused to ask for another one, so binned the remaining Pad Thai! I on the other hand slopped a banana pancake all over me, as it was covered in carnation milk. We watched a firework display from 'Chang House', where for once we didn't drink Chang instead opting for a SangSom bucket. At our guesthouse I was greeted by a rather large, brown cockroach as I went into the bathroom. Andrew was on killing duty before there was any chance of me even attempting to go to sleep!
