The freezing bus journey north...

Ayutthaya, Thailand
We were on our way to the 7 Eleven when our guesthouse owner started complaining that we had not checked in the day before, even though she gave us a key and made us find our own room without saying another word! We had breakfast on our wooden balcony and Andrew almost fell to his death when he lent back on it, as it was literally held together by wiring! We rented a bicycle for the day to ride around some of the other temple ruins not within walking distance. I was a right novice as I kept wobbling all over the place but I blamed the old rusty bicycle. We rode to see Wat Lokayasutharam where there was a huge reclining stone Buddha draped in an orange robe. We also rode past an elephant camp, but it was a little sad to see a baby elephant in a small fenced off area. It was hard work riding a bicycle in the baking sun, so after a few hours we headed back to 'Tony's Place' as it had a small pool that you could dip your feet into to cool off, whilst having a drink. We ended up spending around three hours there making good use of the free WiFi. We then moved to 'Chang House' for a drink before heading to the street market to have our fill of food before our long journey north. We both opted for a Pad Thai, which was far superior to those served on the street in Bangkok. We then returned to 'Tony's Place' for the final time to wait for our bus to Chiang Mai. We filled in the time by playing cards and I came out with yet another incorrect saying, "Ace rules the rooster!" A staff member gave me a flower to put in my hair, which was apparently a sign for the King.

The so-called "VIP" bus was late but we were eventually called to get a Tuk Tuk, which we shared with a French couple whilst another couple got in a separate Tuk Tuk . Our Tuk Tuk driver managed to overtake the other Tuk Tuk and for some stupid reason I waved at the couple inside like a small child would have done. I felt pretty stupid afterwards and Andrew just shook his head! We got dropped off beside the highway, literally, in the dark. We all looked a little concerned by the apparent "Bus Stop" but the bus did turn up ten minutes later. It was around 10pm when we finally boarded and I was shattered, but I had the worst sleep ever. I was well prepared for the air-conditioning as I had worn long trousers, but it was still too cold to sleep and I was even shaking at one point. Andrew had a shot or two of Hong Thong straight to warm himself up, which stunk of pure alcohol. He then decided to munch his way through a big packet of Lays, which broke the silence on the sleeping bus somewhat! I thought it was really foggy outside and that was why the bus was going so slow, but later Andrew told me it was because the headlights on the bus were rubbish so the driver couldn't see too well in the dark!
