Visa Run

Chiang Rai, Thailand
We slept through our 7:30am alarm, but eventually Andrew woke up at 8:30am, demanding that I get out of bed immediately! We got ready and walked to the 'Old Bus Station' in the middle of the town and got a government bus to Mae Sai. It looked so old and shabby, but it did have a few fans attached to the ceiling and you could slide the windows up to allow the warm air outside to blow on your face. As you can imagine it wasn't the most comfortable bus journey, but luckily it only lasted around an hour and a half. We arrived at Mai Sai Bus Station, which was 4km away from the border crossing so we had to board a songthaew. We stood in line at the border crossing and the immigration official stamped our passport to show we were leaving Thailand, whilst taking a mugshot of our face. We then had to walk across a bridge and step foot on Burma soil. The bridge was fairly busy but mainly lined with beggars, which made me start to feel slightly uncomfortable. We reached the other side of the bridge and an official pointed at a red curtain that we had to go through, which led to an office. It looked a little ropey and the immigration officer looked fairly stern when he asked us whether we were going shopping in Burma. We said we were just going straight back to Thailand but we were still asked to pay ten dollars each anyway. They took a mugshot of our face again and stamped our passport, all the while staring at us blankly. I was glad to leave the office and we sharply headed back over the bridge to be stamped back into Thailand.

Once back on Thai soil, we spotted a little restaurant so stopped for some chicken noodle soup before making the return journey . The visa run took pretty much the whole day so when we got back to Chat House we were both in need of a Chang! We sat and played cards, whilst placing a bet on each game. The first bet was that the winner could chose where we ate later. As I won, we went in search of the Indian Restaurant noted in the Rough Guide, but it didn't appear to exist anymore, so Andrew persuaded me in going to 'The Pizza Company' restaurant. I didn't really take much persuading to be honest and the pizza rivaled that of Pizza Hut! The staff didn't speak much English, so when Andrew asked if there was a toilet the waiter just looked confused, until a Thai customer on the table next to us asked in Thai and then they both had a good giggle at the expense of Andrew! We had a slow walk back to Chat House, where we ordered another Chang and I had a piece of home-made banana cake before bed.
