Historical Walk

Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia
Andrew woke up quite early and as usual I went back to sleep! Our sleeping patterns have definitely reversed as he is always awake before me now. He woke me up at 10am so we could go and get our complimentary breakfast, but I had to break the news that it was actually 11am as he musn't have put his clock forward one hour when we got to Malaysia. Therefore, we had missed breakfast so we got a shower and went out in search of something to eat. We were in unfamiliar territory with regard to food and everywhere looked local, as we could not spot a single sign written in English. We walked to the Art Deco 'Central Market' which was constructed in 1888 when it was a fresh food market. However, it underwent extensive refurbishment and now sells all manner of arts, crafts, antiques and souvenirs, as well as housing a Food Court. We wandered around inside before finding the Food Court which was a little bamboozling at first. There were a number of different food outlets and we had difficulty in deciding which one to choose, but eventually stopped at Mini Wok. The food was actually served in a 'Mini Wok' and was good value for money. Once we had eaten we continued on our historical walking tour of Kuala Lumpur. We crossed the river Klang and immediately saw Merdeka Square, which used to be an English cricket ground. It was here that the Prime Minister declared merdeka, or independence, on August 31st 1957, so that gave it the name of Merdeka Square. A 95 metre flagpole also stood near Merdeka Square, waving the Malayan flag to declare independence of the country. There was a black and white mock Tudor building on one side of Merdeka Square which used to be the Royal Selangor Club where the British went to drink! On the other side of the road to Merdeka Square stood the grand Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It had a 41 metre high clock tower and copper domes making it look very elegant. It reminded me of 'Big Ben' in London. We looped back around to go and see the Jamek Mosque but it was quite difficult to see and we didn't have the appropriate clothing to enter the building. We had been walking for quite a while in the sun so we stopped for a drink and a little rest.

We then set off in search of the 'Lake Garden' but it started to rain so we took shelter under a tree . This gave us the opportunity to try and work out if we were heading in the right direction as things didn't seem to be matching up on the map. We decided we had taken the wrong road so we returned the way we came and headed back towards Chinatown. On the way we walked past a Victorian fountain which was over 100 years old and had been brought to Kuala Lumpur from England. We headed past the Old Market Square which had some interesting, old shop-houses painted in bright colours. The one thing that has made us laugh whilst traveling is the random names of things we have come across and today we saw the name of a shop to add to the list. It was called 'FOOK ON CO. LTD.' We obviously had to get a photo before continuing and walking down Petaling Street in search of an adapter plug. We couldn't find the electrical shop that I thought I had seen the night before, but we stopped at a luggage shop as Andrew needed a new backpack. The salesman was trying the hard sell approach but soon dropped his price by more than half immediately! We didn't actually have enough money on us anyway, so we said we would come back later. In the end our hostel owner directed us to a 'Department Store' so we could get an adapter and we came across the same style bag for a lot cheaper so bought it there instead. We dropped off the shopping at our hostel then went out to eat at a Chinese restaurant. We returned to our room and a mosquito flew right past me so I tried to catch it it my hand, which never usually works, but this time I opened my hand to find it smeared in blood! I guess it will save my poor legs from obtaining as many bites tonight whilst asleep!
