Wat Day

Chiang Rai, Thailand
We had a total chill out morning at Chat House. Later, in the afternoon we managed to walk next door to Wat Phra Kaew which was struck by lightning in 1434, which cracked open the chedi. The chedi has since been restored but the so-called 'Emerald Buddha' which is now housed in the Grand Palace in Bangkok was found inside the broken chedi. The story goes that the Buddha image was moved to Lampang soon after being discovered, followed by Chiang Mai, Laos and a number of other destinations before being finally moved to Bangkok in 1778, where it remains today. The Emerald Buddha is actually made of jade. A replica is housed in Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai, which is slightly smaller than the original as a result of Buddhism protocol. The teak wooden chamber that housed the replica Buddha image was lit in a dim green light. The walls were covered in traditional mural paintings to depict the legend of the Emerald Buddha. It was a very serene temple complex in a quiet garden setting.

We also looked inside the large, contemporary two-storey museum that was housed in a dark teak wooded building trimmed in gold . The 'Saengkaew Museum' was built in 1995 to house Buddha related objects and items relating to northern Thai culture. It was a very welcoming place and we were personally greeted by a monk at the entrance. We also spent some time looking at the huge catfish in the pond and the terrapins that we at first thought were fake until one moved. We walked back next door to Chat House and chilled out for the rest of the evening.
