Firefly Trip

Cherating, Pahang, Malaysia
We couldn't get out of bed as it was so comfortable! However, as the sun seemed to be turning our chalet into a sauna I was the first one to eventually get up and have a nice cold shower. I wasn't expecting the shower to be more than a trickle as it had a sort of watering can head, but it was surprisingly powerful which was a nice change. We went across the road to a 'kedai kopi' and had a banana roti canai for breakfast. I had packed our beach bag ready for a day on the beach but the tide was really low so the sea had retreated a few hundred metres and had left a muddy flat. The beach didn't seem that appealing and so we instead walked to 'Duyong' in the hope that it would be open today. This was not the case so our hope of having a Chang in Malaysia has now vanished forever! We decided that Cherating wasn't really a place for us to stay very long, as it was like a ghost town and lacked any sort of atmosphere. We got the impression that it had once been a bustling beach resort but there were now quite a few derelict buildings and chalet operations, as places had clearly gone out of business. Therefore, we decided to leave tomorrow for Pulau Perhentian Kecil, which sounded more like an idyllic island. We bought a replacement torch for the one we had lost as we would need it on the island and booked a bus ticket to Jerteh for tomorrow morning. We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling out on our veranda before going to eat at a 'kedai kopi' where we two main dishes and two soft drinks for a whole three pound.

We decided after some debate to go on a 'Firefly Boat Trip' so we were collected at 8pm and taken to a small boat on the river behind our guesthouse . It was dark by this time and it felt a bit unnerving getting into a boat, especially as I had read that the river was home to crocodiles earlier in the day! We set off down the river as our guide started telling us all about different species of firefly and the conditions they like best. We reached a bridge up ahead and as it was high tide we pretty much had to lie down horizontally in the boat to avoid hitting our head. We soon came across a tree that was sparkling away! It was so weird to see, especially when you got up close and they came flying toward the boat. A bloke behind us on the boat had one land right on the tip of his nose! It was fine to catch them in your hand but I didn't manage it. However, up close they just looked like an average brown beetle, so had I have caught one it would have spoilt the magic. The trip lasted an hour and when we got back to dry land we walked to the only supermarket in the village that sold beer in the hope that it was still open. We were in luck so got a large bottle of Tiger for the bargain price of three pound! We sat on our veranda playing 80s music before going to bed.
