Welcome to the jungle...

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia
I had a terrible sleep as I had so many mosquito bites I spent the night tearing away at my skin. Our alarm went off at 8:30am but we pressed snooze a couple of times before getting out of bed. I enjoyed a nice cold shower whilst Andrew packed his bag and vice versa. We went to get breakfast but there wasn't a single place open, so we instead bought some snacks for the bus journey. We forgot to tell our guesthouse owner that we were checking out and we couldn't find him anywhere, so we had to leave the money we owed in our chalet and post the key under the door. We set off walking to the bus stop and once we got there I immediately decided I needed to eat my snack! We kept a lookout for our bus as we were paranoid it would just drive past us, as the bus stop was just a little shack on the side of the main road. However, it pulled up on time and we got comfortable for the four hour journey ahead. There was no toilet on board the bus so we both took an imodium tablet to prevent any accident! We stopped at a service station and experienced the worst toilet ever! I then stupidly bought a drink that looked like Dr. Pepper but it had the smell and taste of our insect repellent! Andrew safely opted for genuine Coca-Cola, so I was jealous whenever he had a drink. We saw a sign for Jerteh so got ready to get off the bus but it just seemed to drive through the place. Andrew went to ask if we should get off as a few other passengers were alighting, but the driver just made some comment in Malay which caused most of the other passengers on the bus to laugh and left Andrew no wiser. He came back to his seat and a young Malay bloke next to us explained that we had gone past Jerteh so we had missed our stop, even though the bus didn't even stop at the place! He told us to get off at the next stop so we could get a bus back to Jerteh. In the end, the driver called for us at the next stop and pointed to a small bus station on the opposite side of the road which would take us to Kuala Besut. This was where we needed to go to get the boat to Pulau Perhentian Kecil. We got onto a local bus which was so disgusting it sent shivers through my body, as a cockroach ran across the floor and there were many other bugs on board. However, it only took around twenty minutes to reach the pier. We were shown to a ticket office to buy a boat ticket and then to another counter to pay the RM5 island conservation fee. It was all a bit rushed, but we didn't mind one bit as we fully expected to have missed the last boat to the island. It was a fast boat, but not exactly a speedboat as such. We were all given a life jacket to wear, which surprised us somewhat as we have become accustomed to the non-existent safety regulations in Thailand! Andrew sat in the worst seat as it was a rather bumpy ride so he ended up getting a bit wet. The boat had to drop people off at every beach as it is the only method of transport around the island. We got dropped off at our private beach at 'Mira's Place' and it looked spectacular! There was no pier so we just had to hop out of the boat into the sea. We were shown to our room which reminded me of a barn. It was a wooden structure with noting inside but a double bed, two sets of bunk beds and a bat! I wasn't too happy about the bat, or the fact that the door at the back of our room opened out into the jungle! This was also where we found our bathroom, which was basically a squat toilet set in a piece of concrete and a tap for a shower that barely let out a trickle of water!

We were certainly going to have to get used to living in a wooden hut again, as over the last month we have stayed in a guesthouse on the mainlnd . The wildlife in the surrounding jungle made itself visible immediately. We saw a rather big monitor lizard, a squirrel, another monitor lizard, an otter, a stick insect, a bat and another monitor lizard within half an hour of being on the island! The otter was in fact a pet, as the owner had named it and washed it daily. It actually followed him around the place like a dog! We went to sit on the beach for a while just as the sun was setting. The restaurant was closed until 7pm and we were starving so we played cards to pass the time and take our mind off hunger. We ordered a sandwich, which took over half an hour to arrive but it was worth the wait in the end. We returned to our scary barn room and watched a film before bed. The bat, which we named Brian, had went out for the night. I became desperate for the toilet but didn't fancy the trip via the jungle with only a torch. However, in the end I had to be brave but we found an outdoor light, so it wasn't too bad...
