Is there any room left?

Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia
We got ready and ordered breakfast, but it took ages so our bus was ready to leave before it turned up. I pulled a bit of a twisted face at the bus diver without realising so he said he would wait until we had eaten and actually went to pick up some other passengers first so we didn't have to rush. I had the biggest bowl of porridge, so I did end up having to gulp it! We drove over the 'Penang Bridge' which gave us a good view of Georgetown. I then fell asleep as usual, as did everybody else on the minibus, expect Andrew. It took us just under two hours to reach the ferry port at Kuala Kedah. Andrew had realised that we still had our room key in his pocket as we had totally forgot to check out, but luckily the minivan driver was going back to Banana Guesthouse.

The port was so chaotic due to the Public Holiday but we got in the ticket queue just before another mass of people turned up . The next ferry wasn't for another hour but at least we managed to get a ticket. The waiting area was also full of people but we found a seat amongst the crowd. A load of people then started queuing for a ferry that had docked but we had no idea whether it was the one we needed to get on as the information board wasn't all that useful. We asked a security officer who said it wasn't but we didn't want to miss it, so we just went and checked with somebody boarding the ferry. It turned out the officer was right and we had too little faith! We decided to just sit outside and wait for our ferry to turn up so at least we would avoid the rush. Anyway, a member of staff asked to see our ticket and said we could get the 11:30am ferry instead of waiting for the 11:45am one that we had booked, so we ended up on the ferry that was already waiting in the end. It was absolutely freezing on board as the air con was blasting away and we haven't had it in a while, so our feet were turning blue! We watched some Bruce Willis film which kept us entertained for the two hour journey that was supposed to only take an hour! We got off and it felt as though we had landed in a airport as the ferry port was full of duty free shops and therefore crowds of shoppers bustling around the place . We eventually managed to find the way out and got a taxi to Pantai Cenang.

We had tried to book a place to stay but nowhere seemed to take bookings, so you just had to turn up on the day, This didn't prove too successful as we tried one backpacker place which was full and I noticed another traveler who was struggling to find anywhere to stay after checking a few places in the area. We could have booked a place at the Kuala Kedah ferry port which I suggested to Andrew, especially with it being a Public Holiday but he just said we should take the chance. I was already thinking in my head I told you so but we kept searching without any luck! A random person came over to us asking if we were looking for a budget hotel, which must have been petty obvious, as she had just checked out of a place. She rang for us but they had just given the room away. We found one place that had a room available at RM275 per night, too much of a leap from the RM25 we paid in Pulau Penang! We went in search of the Amzar Motel which a few people had mentioned and I remembered seeing it in the Rough Guide. The other traveler followed us so we hoped if there was room, there was more than one! We luckily got the last two rooms which was such a relief! The room was spotless and had an attached bathroom as well as air-con for only RM45 per night. The owner said we could help ourselves to the mango's off the tree outside our chalet and there was free drinking water and Wi-Fi. We dropped off our backpack and then went in search of something to eat. It was obviously a little more expensive as it was a tourist destination, but it was still a shock to us and it was definitely the highest food prices we had seen so far in Malaysia. We went down to the beach to see if there were any cheaper looking cafes, but they all looked more expensive so we settled for a Thai restaurant. It was reasonably priced and it reminded us of how much we love Thai food! We walked back to our room and I ended up falling asleep for a couple of hours whilst Andrew sorted out our recent photo collection. I woke up at around 8pm and we went to buy some snacks as we had eaten quite late in the day. I managed to hit the jackpot with a packet of biscuits that Andrew thought looked awful but tasted awesome, which is difficult to come by in Asia! We sat and watched a film before bed in our nice comfortable bed!
