Taiping, Perak, Malaysia
We had a nice lie in until around 11am and then got ready before walking to the 'Central Market' for something to eat. We were the only Westerners around and so as we walked through the food market we got a few strange looks but we scanned around for a sign that we could kind of understand. We stopped at a place that sold economy rice, which was where you were given a plate of rice and could then choose three scoops from various pots. It cost us a whole RM3.50 which was around 65p and the local lady was very friendly. We then walked to the old clock tower to collect a heritage map of the town but the information centre was closed for lunch. We had a rough map so walked past the padang towards the Lake Gardens but we got a little lost on the way to the Perak Museum. It was a main road that we had to walk alongside but there was no path so we had to either walk on the road or on the grass verge when possible, but we still heard a few beeping horns that were probably aimed at us! We eventually arrived at a prison built in 1887, which is where some of the executions of Malaysia's drug offenders are carried out. We actually saw a group of prisoners dressed in fluorescent yellow overalls being escorted into the prison. A few of the guards also gave us a strange look as we walked past and finally reached the Perak Museum. It was housed in a cool, colonial building and was first opened in 1883, being the first ever museum in Malaysia. The museum looked as though it had just undergone renovation and the exhibits were all clearly signed in English. There were items showing the culture and history of Malaysia and some stuffed fauna. The top floor was dedicated to the Orang Asli community and housed weapons, clothing, ornaments and gave a real overview of how these people live. We had a slow walk back to our room to collect our laptop as we spotted a place that had free WiFi. We had a little rest in our room before heading out for something to eat. We arrived at the Night Market but unfortunately spotted Pizza Hut next door which was too difficult to resist! We got a good offer that consisted of a bowl of chicken soup, garlic bread, regular pizza and Pepsi for around six pound. We walked back to our room in the dark as there were very few street lights and watched a film before bed.
