Cable Car

Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia
We got up at around 11am after lying in bed and listening to the rain pour for the whole morning. It was the one day that we needed it to be sunny so we would be able to go up the Cable Car, so of course it was cloudy and wet! We went to the 'Breakfast Bar' for something to eat and just as we had paid and left the rain started again and it was a full on thunder storm. I was so annoyed as the last couple of days had been so nice and sunny. We had to sit in our room as the rain was really heavy, but after an hour or so I could see some blue sky appearing in the distance. I told Andrew that we had to leave immediately so we went to get a taxi. It was going to cost RM26 just to get to the Cable Car, which we thought was a bit much as it was much closer than the jetty yet more expensive! The taxi man claimed that it was a standard fare and that every taxi driver would charge the same. We have come to be rather cynical when told a taxi fare, so we went inside to ask the owner if that was a fair price. The standard fare was the truth, so a better option was to hire the taxi for four hours at RM100 and then we could go wherever we wanted in that time. Our first stop was the Cable Car which covers a total distance of 2.2km linking the 'Base Station' at the foot of Gunung Mat Cincang to the 'Top Station' at the mountain summit. It is the longest free span single rope cable car in the world, as one section is 919.5 metres long! We had to walk through the Oriental Village, which was a man-made attraction consisting mostly of souvenir shops and restaurants surrounding a lake. We were rather disappointed that a sign said the 'Canopy Walkway' was closed but we have become used to everything being closed on our itinerary! We got our ticket and stood in the surprisingly short queue waiting for a free gondola. The staff got people in a group of four but we were an odd two so thought we would get a gondola to ourselves, but just as we were about to get inside another person turned up. It was so quiet inside the gondola, which made everything seem strange as you started to descend up the mountain. It was much higher than we expected and it was clear enough to see a few islands belonging to the Langkawi archipelago in the distance. The other person in our gondola seemed quite concerned about the height we were reaching and decided he would just look at the floor! We got out at the 'Middle Station' where there was a viewing platform looking out towards the Andaman Sea. It was literally like floating on a cloud and you couldn't really see anything in the background! We got back into a gondola on our own this time and traveled up to the 'Top Station' through low-level cloud which was a bit eerie and weird as you couldn't see the end point. We walked up to the viewing platform, which was 708m above sea level and some of the cloud had cleared so it was a better view. As we were walking back to get into a gondola I noticed that the barrier to the Canopy Walkway had been opened so we checked whether we were allowed to enter. It had just been reopened due to the change in weather so for once something turned out right for us! It was quite a walk to reach it down some steps that looked a little worse for wear, but we got onto the curved walkway above Gunung Mat Cincang, overlooking the treetops below us. Andrew seemed a little cautious underfoot as he stepped on a wobbly plank! It did feel strange walking so high above the ground and the walkway actually swayed a bit in the wind! It was quiet for a while as it had obviously just re-opened when the cloud covering had passed, so we had the opportunity to take in the scenery alone. We returned up to the 'Top Station' and got a gondola all the way back down to the 'Base Station'. Our taxi man was waiting to take us to the 'Air Terjun Waterfall' and the 'Telaga Tujuh' which were only a short drive away.

We reached the bottom of the staircase that led to the top of the waterfall, so bought a bottle of water as it looked like it was going to be a steep walk! We were sweating within a minute as the sun had started shining and the steps were rather steep . We saw a hornbill bird on the way up as well as a strange coloured beetle, but by the time Andrew had got out the camera it had scurried away! I needed a short rest just to catch my breath before we continued and eventually made it to the top. It was a freshwater stream that had formed pools in the rocks, so that there were several pools down a slope. The local people referred to it as the Telaga Tujuh which means 'Seven Wells' but I don't think there were exactly seven pools, though I may have been wrong. As I was so hot I immediately got into a pool to cool off. The water was so clean and there were a couple of little fishes in there that I hadn't noticed at first! Andrew wasn't going to get wet at first but soon changed his mind and he was brave enough to slide down from one pool into the next as a result of the slippery moss covering the rock. I on the other hand couldn't actually get out of one pool because of the moss so Andrew had to offer a helping hand after I had slid back in a few times and got stressed out! There was a barrier at the bottom of the last pool that stopped you falling down the cliff, which formed the 90m Air Terjun waterfall. A woman was sat by one pool reading a book as a long-tailed macaque appeared out of nowhere and stole her food! We realised that they were everywhere after drying off and heading back down the stairs to meet our friendly chauffeur. We didn't have much time left so we just drove to the 'Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall' to get a McDonald's before driving back to Pantai Cenang. We went over our time limit by half an hour but he didn't charge us anything extra. We arranged for him to pick us up in the morning to take us to the jetty. We went bikini shopping but had no luck so instead bought chocolate! We then chilled out in our room for the rest of the night, to prepare for a long day of traveling south the next day.
