The long journey to Lumut...

Pulau Pangkor, Perak, Malaysia
We got ready and walked to the local bus station but the only bus to Lumut had left at 7am and we didn't get there until 9am. So, we decided to get a taxi to the express bus station as we thought we would have more of a chance getting a bus. The taxi man tried his very best to convince us to pay him RM110 to take us all the way to Lumut himself, no matter how many times we said we wanted to get the bus. However, there was no direct bus to Lumut from the express bus station either so our only option was to get an express bus to Ipoh and then take a local bus to Lumut. The journey to Ipoh only took an hour or so but we then had to walk to the local bus station which was luckily only over the road but unluckily only had a bus to Lumut at 1pm, which meant an almost two hour wait. There was a small restaurant so we had something to eat whilst waiting for the bus. We eventually boarded the bus along with our backpack as it was an old, piece of rust with no baggage compartment. We sat at the back so at least we could put our backpack in the centre but the back seat was a bad choice, as it smelt of urine and we were right on top of the engine so it was a little hot! The air-con didn't help as it blew out warm air and I felt as though I was going to die! It was a long two hour journey to Lumut and the bus seemed to stop at every bus stop along the way, sometimes to drop off the post as well as people. We finally got dropped off at Lumut and it was only a short walk to the jetty. We only had to wait half an hour for the next ferry and we arrived at Pulau Pangkor twenty minutes later. We got a bright pink taxi to Teluk Nipah on the west coast of the island and got dropped off at Seagull Beach Resort. The owner showed us a room for RM30 per night but it had a particularly awful musty smell and the outside bathroom was crawling with giant ants so I wasn't taken on the place immediately! He showed us a RM50 room that was in a long-house, which was better but not fantastic, so I asked for a discount as we were planning on staying five nights anyway. He dropped the price to RM45 which was better than RM50 i guess, so we took it and collapsed on the bed for the rest of the afternoon. We got up and went out in search of something to eat, but there didn't seem to be many options as a lot of places looked abandoned or closed! We found a place that looked the best out of a bad bunch but the food was at best average and so over-priced for Malaysia. We were the only customers in the restaurant as a live singer set up and started playing a tune on his guitar. However, half way through his phone rang so he simply stopped and took the call for everyone to hear as he left his microphone switched on, much to the grievance of the restaurant owner who shot him a look of disgust!
