Banana Leaf

Singapore, Singapore
I woke up at the respectable time of 4am as the clock struck the hour and chimed four times rather loudly in the communal area. I managed to get back to sleep just to be woken up again at 5:15am as the dorm light was switched on and Ali showed two people the room. However, they obviously weren't keen on staying in the dorm as they soon left. It was then 8am when the French traveller was leaving for her flight and so again we were woken up. I didn't really sleep much more after that and so got Andrew up to eat breakfast. There was toast, butter, jam, marmite, tea and coffee as usual on offer for breakfast. I made the toast for us but as I sat down to eat it I started to feel a little sick. I managed to eat it but after drinking some water off I rushed to the toilet as it wasn't happy on staying in me! I felt dreadful and it appeared that I had a minor bout of food poisoning for the third time on the trip. I also had the worst headache so immediately returned to my bed and tried to get back to sleep. I didn't really succeed but couldn't do much else so I just laid there for a while. Andrew went to make himself a coffee and Ali asked whether he were ready to move into a double room, so Andrew then had to explain that we were leaving as we had found a double room elsewhere. The Grandma of the house popped her head into the dorm room and had a quick look round before closing the door, so I was so glad to be leaving the crazy joint! It seemed as though everybody staying at Ali's was just hanging around, waiting for a visa and so it was full of a strange mix of people, all on the odd side! Andrew got sucked into my Psychology book whilst I continued to feel sorry for myself. However, I was desperate to leave Ali's so I got ready and we set off walking to Footprints Hostel which wasn't too far away. We checked in and made our way up to our dorm room, which was a refreshing change to Ali's and we got talking to an American guy who lived in the Philippines and highly recommended a visit to the place. I had a nice cool shower thinking that it would miraculously cure my food poisoning, but of course it didn't so I continued to do nothing. I was so disappointed that we had to spend our first day in Singapore in our room.

We spent some time talking to another American couple who turned up before heading to Ganhdi Restaurant for something to eat . We were a bit clueless as we took a seat in the restaurant and looked around at everyone eating off a banana leaf. We waited patiently until a waiter came over and placed a banana leaf in front of us and then placed three scoops of food in a row on the leaf. This was followed by a gigantic pile of boiled rice and then a bowl of chicken curry and mutton curry. There was a free jug of water placed on our table and a poppadom turned up a little while later. We opted to use a spoon, even though it is usually eaten by hand. We were so stuffed but the waiter returned when we had stopped eating to see if we wanted any more rice! The whole meal cost $13, which was around six pound and very cheap for Singapore. We called off at a 7 Eleven so that Andrew could sample some more cheap beer. We got back to our hostel which was completely overrun by children, so there was no way we could sit in the communal area. We got back to our dorm and a Canadian guy turned up soon after so we sat and talked to him about travelling.
