Colonial District, Orchard Road & Monopoly

Singapore, Singapore
We went for breakfast but we were a little bit shocked at the mess that was the communal area. There were food remains all over the table and floor and people hadn't washed up so the sink was full. In addition, there was no fruit or cereal left and there was more jam on the bench than in the jar itself! We found the cleanest spot to sit and just about managed to get some toast and coffee. The hostel owner clearly wasn't happy because she kept slamming things in the sink and had to wash up after everybody else. However, she did offer to wash up our stuff as we couldn't get to the sink! We walked to Little India MRT station and got a train to Raffles Place, which was in the CBD. We walked along Boat Quay until we reached the MICA building on Hill Street. The building really stood out as it was so colourful yet elegant. It was originally built in 1934 when it operated as a Police Station. It was even described as a modern skyscraper at the time, which is crazy as it is now a dwarf in a towering city. The building had a total of 927 windows and they were painted in the colours of the rainbow. We crossed the road to reach the entrance to Fort Canning Park, which involved a tiring climb to the top as it was situated on a hill. It was nice to just stroll around a city park for a while as it was a huge contrast to the bustling CBD. We had a glimpse inside the 'Battle Box' which was located nine metres underground in one of the bunkers in Fort Canning Park. It was the largest military operations complex in Singapore.

We then left Fort Canning Park via a different way which led us onto Orchard Road, a road spanning almost 2 .2km and flanked by glitzy shopping malls to suit all manner of taste. The road had very wide pathways and greenery so it wasn't crowded and it didn't feel as manic as other city shopping. The first shopping mall we visited was the 'Plaza Singapura' which even had a Dorothy Perkins and a decent sized Marks & Spencer! We walked further along the road, passing the stern looking soldiers guarding the main gate of the Istana, which was the residency of the President of Singapore. We entered the shiny new silver 'Orchard Central' mall which was far too pretentious for us so we immediately turned around and left the building. We spotted 'The Centrepoint' mall across the road which appeared to be more suited to our standard as it housed a Mango, Zara, Swensen's, McDonald's and Marks & Spencer. We arrived just in time for a 'Lunch Value' McDonald's meal at a bargain price for the location! As we walked further along the road the designer boutiques started appearing with more regularity as the likes of D&G, Gucci and Armani lined the main road . However, there stood a Topshop and Topman so we couldn't resist a browse, which turned out to be a method of torture as we were unable to buy anything! We decided we couldn't handle any more window shopping, so we got a McDonald's ice cream and sat on a bench to watch the street continue shopping. After a little rest we were ready to walk to Waterloo Street.

We strolled down Waterloo Street, which had an art gallery on each side, until we reached a much busier street that had the same feel to it as Chinatown, just on a smaller scale. There were a number of stalls set up in the middle of the street, which was completely pedestrianised, selling fresh flower garlands and incense as there was a Chinese temple and Hindu temple lining the street. Once we had left the hustle and bustle we ended up at Little India without really realising it. We were fairly tired after spending the day on our feet so we had a rest in our hostel before we went to the 'City Square Mall' to eat at the Food Court. We got a 'Set Meal' for the very reasonable price of $15, which was around four pound each. We then visited the supermarket to buy some beer and we were overjoyed to see Chang on the shelf! However, there were only two large bottles left so we instead bought a six can pack for around five pound, which was a bargain in Singapore! We walked back to our hostel and sat in the communal area where we got talking to a couple from London. We decided to have a game of 'Singapore Monopoly' which I won by a long way as I caused everyone to become bankrupt! We had a Chinese rice beer once we had drunk our Chang and ended up talking until after 2am before heading off to bed ready for another busy day.
