Arak Attack

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
We got up at around 10:00am and as usual we only had to walk a few metres to sit on our veranda and order breakfast. We both got a banana pancake as they were so delicious the previous day. We quickly had a hot shower and then walked down Monkey Forest Road in search of a cash point. Our credit card failed to let us withdraw money which has happened more than once, so we had to use my Visa card. However, the maximum withdrawal was only 1.25 million rupiah, which was around ninety pound. This was enough to pay our accommodation but we started to wonder whether 1.25 million was always the limit as we were going to need a fair bit more for our trip to the Gili islands. Anyway, we returned to Sayong House to check out but our bill was a little more than we had expected as they added a further ten percent government tax. We paid and cut through to Sania's House next door. The owner didn't remember us so we had to explain that we had booked a room. He showed us a room for 200,000 rupiah and a one for 150,000 rupiah, which we took as the only difference was that the cheaper room had a cold shower. We kept the hot shower room for Sam and Dean. It certainly wasn't as nice as Sayong House as it smelt a little damp and the toilet seat wasn't attached to the toilet, but it was acceptable and the price also included breakfast. We dropped our stuff on the spare single bed in our room and decided to wander around Ubud rather than have another day by the pool.

We set off walking towards the rice paddy fields which were situated just outside of the centre of Ubud . The entire main road we walked along was lined with local art and craft shops where you could buy almost anything made to order. We saw a number of things we liked, including a mirror made out of twigs and an enormous stone Buddha carving. There was even a DHL and FedEx shop, which suggested that people regularly bought items and had them shipped back home. We walked for a fair while but there was no end to the shops and no green rice paddies in sight. I almost fell down a man hole on the way as they were either completely uncovered or wobbly so I soon learnt to avoid them full stop. There were also a few dogs that barked in our direction which immediately made me think I was going to get bitten and die of Rabies! We eventually gave up on finding the rice paddy fields as the shop lined road just went on and on, so we turned around and started the long walk back to Sania's House. However, we felt hungry along the way so we walked down a side street to the restaurant we had spotted the previous night. I ordered potato and egg soup which was a nice change, whilst Andrew got crispy noodles and green vegetables . We then chilled out by the pool for a while, watching the Indonesian children playing and putting on a little performance for us. The sun soon disappeared so we went to sit on our veranda and couldn't resist a Bintang beer whilst waiting for Sam and Dean to arrive. Andrew was so restless in anticipation of their arrival that he literally couldn't sit still! We started to think that they may have been unable to find Sania's House so we walked to Monkey Forest Road and stood in the rain peering into each and every taxi in the hope that they would turn up. However, there was no sign of them so we just returned and sat on our veranda.

We soon heard somebody rustling next door as Sam and Dean were being shown to their room. We immediately ran to give them a huge hug before they had even put down their bag. They quickly got changed and we set off walking down Monkey Forest Road in search of a nice place to eat as it was Sam's birthday. We kept looking at each menu we passed but they were all a little expensive until we found a mid-range place that was lit by candlelight set back from the main road . The drink of the day was Bintang for Andrew and Dean while Sam and I had a cocktail. It took a long time for our meal to be served even though there weren't many people in the restaurant, but it was a nice treat to have a fish dish. We then went to the 'Reggae Bar' where it was Bintang all round. We checked whether they were playing the 'Champions League Cup Final' as Dean couldn't not watch it! However, it didn't start until 2:30am so we decided to walk to the 'Shisha Lounge' as they had also advertised the match. It was a big mistake that we realised as soon as we stepped foot inside the place. It was far too posh for us and that was reflected in the price of a Bintang! I had suggested we try it out as it looked like a cheap place from the outside, but inside it was all marble flooring and cushioned seating. We sat at a table to decide how we could leave without looking too stupid. I just got up and started walking out and at the door Dean made some comment about leaving his camera as the reason why we were leaving so soon! We returned to the 'Reggae Bar' which was completely empty by this point and even the staff were snoozing in the corner. However, it soon turned 2:30am and a small crowd gathered to watch Manchester United versus Barcelona. We placed a friendly bet on the final score as the match got underway. I sampled the worst cocktail, along with Sam, called Arak Attack which contained a local spirit. It had the same smell as paint stripper so it took a while to drink. We then opted for a glass of rose wine which was a nice change as I hadn't drunk wine for a very long time. I fell asleep along with Sam and Andrew before being woken up to pay our bill. We walked back to Sania's House and went straight to sleep after being told to be quiet by our next door neighbour.
