We woke up at 11:15am and I went to knock on Sam and Dean's door straight away as breakfast was only served until 11:00am. I had to apologise for our lateness when ordering breakfast as the member of staff stared at his watch but then said it was fine. I couldn't resist a banana pancake but it wasn't anywhere near as nice as the one served at Sayong House next door. We all felt a little hungover and sleepy after having an early morning return to Sania's House. However, we got ready and walked down Monkey Forest Road to Monkey Forest itself. On the way Dean bought a bag of monkey nuts while we all had an isotonic drink to wake up. It was 20,000 rupiah to enter Monkey Forest and as Dean was paying at the ticket counter he was asked if the monkey nuts in the plastic bag he was carrying were for the monkeys, but he just claimed they were for him to eat. We walked through the place and it was teeming with long-tailed macaques who happily sat on the path and were clearly very familiar with humans as they didn't appear to be scared. We saw a couple of baby monkeys and before long a monkey had jumped onto Dean as he was carrying a bag. A monkey even tried to pinch the bottle that Andrew was holding as they had learnt that humans usually carried food! Dean shrugged the monkey off but another one bolted over and jumped on him before climbing onto his back. The entire forest then seemed to clear out as they surrounded Dean and his monkey nuts until he had no other choice but to throw away the bag containing the nuts! I could hear Sam's screams in the distance as she had also been surrounded by monkeys, so Dean made his way through to the rescue. We reached the other end of Monkey Forest so turned back and crossed a bridge to a small river. There was a huge tree that had thousands of spindly, rope branches that hung downwards and eventually turned into roots as they nestled into the ground. I somehow managed to spot a small monitor lizard across the river as it climbed the wall. We had our fill of Monkey Forest so left and walked to a cheap warung for something to eat. It took a little while to be served but the food was excellent value and freshly made. We then returned to Sania's House to find out where we could see the stepped rice paddy fields in the surrounding countryside. We were given a rough guide so set off walking, via the market. It wasn't too long before the centre of Ubud stopped and there wasn't a shop anywhere in sight as the landscape turned green. We walked down a narrow back road and asked a local if we were heading in the right direction. They seemed to just point straight ahead so we continued on the same path. We certainly saw a number of paddy fields but they weren't of the lush green stepped variety. However, we did pass a large black spider in a web by the side of the road which in turn put me off walking through a rice paddy! We reached a deep valley and although the view was nice there were still no rice paddies in sight so we turned back and asked a security guard outside of a nice hotel. He told us to return the way we came and turn left near a white house. We had a look but it wasn't the picturesque landscape that is typical of Bali. We gave up our search and started the return journey to Sania's House. It was now the second time that Andrew and I had failed to find a lush green rice paddy field!
We walked through the market again where Dean decided to pick up a pair of long trousers, so the fun then began as the stall holder gathered around us
. They offered a ridiculous first price so Dean had to put forward his best bargaining skills, which turned out to be decent. We carried on walking only to be stopped as Dean wondered how much the same trousers were on a different stall. The woman ended up grabbing Dean by his arm as she tried desperately to make a sale. Andrew had the joy of another woman holding trousers up against him after he told her over and over again he didn't want a pair, so he had to leave as he was losing the will to live! We had made a silly mistake at Sania's House by expressing an interest in white water rating. This resulted in one member of staff constantly hassling us and coming to our room before he had even put the key in the lock! He offered us a decent price but it was on a river that required us to have some white water rafting experience so we had to do a bit of research on the internet. We ended up booking with a reputable company on a river that wasn't as fast flowing and hence much safer for our first time.
We got ready and walked up Monkey Forest Road where we found a busy restaurant and a waitress that convinced us the food was of a high standard
. It took us a while to mull over the menu but the end result was that Andrew and I ordered lasagne and Sam and Dean ordered a chicken roll. The food was very nice but the potion size was far too small so as soon as we had finished eating we felt hungry! Dean convinced Andrew to practice speaking Indonesian so taught him how to ask for the bill. However, Dean was more curious as to whether they would understand the phrase as in Jakarta they often just pulled a confused face. Andrew successfully spoke the phrase and much to Dean's surprise the waitress responded in Indonesian and perfectly understood the request. We walked back to Sania's House and gathered in Sam and Dean's room to play online countdown. I was part of 'Team Thick' along with Sam but we soon turned into 'Team Bright' as we won 2-1. We then proceeded to watch the funniest countdown clips on You Tube before retiring for the night.
