White Water Rafting

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
We had an early start at 9:30am and I ordered the usual banana pancake for breakfast. The ShangriLa Spa had the best reviews in Ubud so Sam and I set off for a massage. It was the first time I had left Andrew in a long time! We arrived at the ShagriLa Spa but it was fully booked, much to our disappointment, so we went to another place next door called Eve Spa which still looked nice. The only thing was that one of us had to have a male masseuse. However, we decided we could cope with that so we had a seat while we were brought a glass of water. We both opted for a traditional Balinese massage so we were taken to a room that contained two beds and were told to undress. We weren't entirely sure if we were expected to completely strip off so we remained in our bikini until the female entered the room and asked us to take off our bikini top and lie down on the bed on our front. The massage bed even had a face hole. I was the lucky one to end up with the male but he was so professional that I felt at ease. It was a full body oil massage and it felt so relaxing even though he pulled my bikini bottoms down slightly to massage by bum cheeks and back! I struggled a little when it came to the foot massage but I ended up gritting my teeth so that I didn't laugh and make him feel stupid. Sam let out a little laugh as her underarm was tickled. We had to turn over and although Sam got a chest massage I was just covered over to avoid any embarrassment! The hour passed by so quickly and we didn't want it to be over but when it was we had a quick shower to wash off most of the oil. We were then served a glass of water and a ginger tea as well as a small fruit platter. We felt all refreshed and throughly enjoyed the massage so left a grateful comment in the book. We then went to a shop as Sam wanted a new bikini. We got back to Sania's House but Andrew and Dean were nowhere in sight so we decided to go and get something to eat but on our way out they turned up. They had already been to eat at the cheap warung we were on our way to, so we left them at Sania's House. Sam ordered sweet potato chips which were the best thing I had tasted in a while although my eggplant curry was also pretty good. We just made it back in time for 1:30pm as we were getting picked up to go white water rafting. We felt a little awkward as the person who had tried so hard to sell us a white water rafting package came to tell us that our lift was waiting. We had to walk to the end of the street to meet the minibus and then picked up an Australian family before making the forty five minute journey to the Ayung river. The landscape that we drove through on the way was lush green and we finally got to see stepped rice paddy fields along with traditional Balinese architecture. We paid at the ticket counter and were then kitted out in all the safety equipment, including a life jacket and helmet. Andrew needed the toilet and for some reason felt the need to remove all of his safety equipment that he had just fastened securely. Sam went to the toilet and came back to report there was a framed photo of Jean-Claude Van Damme on the wall as he had been rafting on the same river! We were then shown to the waiting area where we all got a little nervous before beginning the hike down some never-ending steps to the river valley. As we reached the bottom my knees were literally shaking! The four of us stepped into our inflatable raft and we were given instructions on how to raft safely. We were informed by our instructor that the word "boom boom" meant hold on tight and the word "big boom boom" meant sit down on the raft floor. We were also shown how to paddle correctly although it took us a while to become synchronised as we began our 9km journey down the Ayung river.

The surrounding environment was beautiful and we passed many waterfalls along the route . We also saw a pretty, bright blue kingfisher. I was holding onto the rope so tightly that my fingers started to turn red! We reached a huge waterfall where we had a break so that we could get out of our raft and stand beneath it, but it was so powerful it hurt. We continued our journey and Sam let out a scream as a water spider suddenly jumped on her arm and she struggled to remove the thing. We thoroughly enjoyed the rapid sections even though Sam and I screamed every time. I got really irritated at one man in another raft as he singled me out and insisted on splashing me with water! We reached the final stretch but somehow managed to get stuck atop a huge boulder and we almost lost balance as we jiggled back and forth to the point that we were almost going overboard. It also started to rain quite heavily which just added to the experience but we were completely soaked by the time we reached dry land. We were actually the first raft to finish so we made our way to the exit point which involved climbing so many stairs that Sam felt dizzy and had to rest for a while . We eventually made it to the top and were then shown to a minivan and driven to a nearby restaurant. It was nice to be given a towel on arrival and we quickly dried off and got changed before watching the DVD of our rafting experience. We paid a ridiculous 18,000 rupiah for a can of coke but we were in need of an energy boost. Dean bought a photo of us in action but the best photo was the one where Andrew looked as though he was having a snooze while passing through a rapid! On the way out I turned round to see Andrew on the floor after falling down a step. We piled into the minivan and made the short journey back to the centre of Ubud where we got dropped off at the market. We were so hungry that we went straight to eat at the tasty yet cheap warung and had a feast. We all ordered more than one dish and washed it down with non other than a Bintang.

We returned to Sania's House and found the best fast boat deal to the Gili's and booked it for the following day. We spent some time chilling out on our veranda as it started to rain. However, we needed to go to a cash point so we had to brave the wetness in the end as there was no sign of the rain stopping. Our next stop was a shop so that Dean could purchase a pair of flip flops, but he ended up a little unhappy as his toes hung over the end. We returned to Sania's House after buying an ice cream to play good old countdown online. The online game managed to throw out a couple of words including peas, anthem and crates, but nothing as funny as the You Tube clip we had watched the previous night. There was no more Bintang to be drunk at Sania's as they had run out so we soon called it a night in preparation for the 6:30am start the following morning.
