We got up at around 10:00am and went for our first breakfast at Gili Hideaway. I had a banana and cinnamon pancake which was perfectly cooked along with a decent pot of tea and a fruit platter. The breakfast was the best yet by a long way and the service was so commendable as the staff ensured we had everything we needed before leaving us at the huge communal table. We got ready and set off walking down the narrow dirt track to the beach, but Sam decided to let out a huge scream on the way. She managed to point up at a tree were there was a rather large black spider in a web. It had long, twig-like legs and a fat body. We carried on walking and stopped at a place to rent a bicycle for the day. Dean noticed a sign for an underwater camera but when he asked about it the person had no idea how much it cost to rent. We came to realise that it was an advert put up by a place situated opposite the harbour, so we hopped on our bicycle and headed that way. I was a little unsteady on my bicycle after a night of drinking and on numerous occasions I nearly rode into oncoming traffic. We found the shop that rented the underwater camera so we asked the member of staff to explain how it worked before we made a decision. It seemed simple enough and you could even take a movie. It cost 200,000 rupiah for a day, which was around fifteen pound, and you could take up to two thousand photos that were then copied onto a CD. We opted to rent one and then rode to rent snorkel gear for the day. We were told about a good spot so we dropped our stuff on the beach and made our way into the sea. It was so much easier to reach the coral reef in comparison to the previous day as it was high tide and there was less broken coral. Dean soon realised that he had a leaking snorkel so he went back to exchange it as Andrew, Sam and I swam further out to sea. The coral was in much better shape and it was teeming with marine life. I came up for a breath just as Andrew lifted his head out of the water to say he had spotted a turtle. I was so excited as I put my head back in the water and scanned the sea bed until I found it swimming away so I kicked as hard as I could to get a better view. It was an awesome thing to see but it soon swam away into the deep sea and I certainly wasn't heading the same way. We spent around an hour in the sea but it was fairly tiring due to the current so we got out and dried off before cycling to the harbour. We had something to eat and then rode further up the beach to the aptly named 'Turtle Point' snorkeling site as Dean was itching to see a turtle. The sea looked a little rough and so Sam and I decided to stay on the beach. We lost sight of Andrew and Dean on numerous occasions and when they finally returned to dry land they explained that they had climbed into a boat at one point as they were exhausted from swimming. The current was even stronger and the water was really murky and churned up so they had a difficult time snorkeling, but they did spot two turtles which made it all worthwhile in the end. However, they didn't get any good photos of the turtles as they were too deep.
We got on our bicycle and attempted to ride around the island coast road, but it was covered in sand in parts which made riding too difficult so we turned around and started riding to the south west corner of the island
. A local suddenly cut me off as she rode her bicycle towards the side of the road and then I suddenly saw a horse and cart hurtling down the road at a crazy speed with nobody in control of it. Sam managed to get in to the side of the road as it whizzed past and somebody started whistling to alert the crowd of people on the road up ahead. A local lady was crying hysterically as she and her two young sons had been in the middle of the road when the horse was approaching so she was clearly in shock. It shook us up a bit as it could have caused a really bad accident and I didn't even see the thing until I had been cut off by another bicycle. We started riding again and made a quick stop at the underwater mask rental shop to ask if we could keep the mask until midday the following day as Dean desperately needed a good turtle shot! This wasn't a problem so we followed the road to 'Sunset Bar' which was simply a wooden deck placed on the corner of the island with an ice box full of Bintang! We were a little early for the sunset so we had a few games of cards whilst waiting
. A small crowd gathered to watch the sun set behind Bali alongside the silhouette of a volcano in the distance. We walked down onto the beach to escape the gathering and enjoy the scene. Once the sun had set we had to ride back to Gili Hideaway to get ready for party night. Andrew decided to pull a number of stunts on his bicycle as he had drank one Bintang! We stopped at a shop to buy a bottle of coke and then quickly got showered so we could sit and have a beverage. Sam had a bucket of ice ready for us and we sat in the cushioned area chilling out after a hard day snorkeling!
We walked to the south of the island and stopped at 'The Beach House' for a seafood BBQ treat. As usual, we all ordered the same dish, a BBQ tuna steak. We could then help ourself to the salad bar and we also got a jacket potato. It was the best meal Andrew and I had eaten for a while and the portion size was far superior than anywhere else we had eaten in Indonesia. Our waiter, clearly working hard for a tip, showed us a trick where he balanced two forks on a cocktail stick sticking out of a bottle of Bintang
. We were quite impressed but that may have been down to the Bintang we had drank. Dean then tried to teach him Bishop slang which was hilarious but all wrong at the same time. We were so full but luckily only had to walk next door to 'Tir Na Nog' which held a party every Wednesday night. It was rum and coke for Sam and I which was fairly strong and the usual Bintang for Andrew and Dean. We went to have a little dance in the sand but we were soon shown our place as a local cleared the dancing area for a dance off, which wasn't all that inspiring. He even had a piece of wood hidden under the sand so that he could perform a head spin without burying his face. However, Dean came to the conclusion that it was a trap door! We went to sit at the bar whilst Sam decided to pose for a photo shoot. We stumbled home and into bed at something o' clock in the morning.
