I feel sick...

Gili Air, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia
We woke up to our alarm beeping at 7:30am and got ready for our last breakfast at Gili Hideaway. I opted for the scrambled eggs on toast although I found it difficult to turn down a pancake! We were all half asleep but before we left the owner requested a photo of us for the Gili Hideaway facebook page. I started to think we were going to miss the public boat as we had to be at the harbour for 8:30am and we still hadn't left Gili Hideaway at 8:20am. We said goodbye and thank you to the staff and whilst everyone else rode their bicycle I had to push mine as my backpack kept tipping me off balance. We returned our bicycle and decided to get a horse and cart to take us to the harbour which was a rip off at 40,000 rupiah, which was around three pound, for a few hundred metre journey. It also turned out to be a waste of money as Sam had got the time wrong as the boat didn't leave until 9:30am rather than 9:00am. We bought a ticket from the office which only cost 23,000 rupiah each and waited under a shelter for our boat. We were soon called forward and boarded the small wooden boat which became quite full. I don't usually get travel sickness but the journey did make me feel a little queasy. On the other hand, Sam felt sick as soon as she sat down on the boat and wanted to get off immediately. We first called at Gili Meno before Gili Air where we had to wade through the shallow water to reach dry land. There were horse and carts waiting to transport people around the island but we just started walking east towards a place called Mawar. We got offered "cheap accommodation" along the way but then I noticed a flyer for Mawar. We had a look and it seemed fine just as it had been described in the Lonely Planet guide so we followed the owner to the place. We cut through a coconut plantation and were shown to a bungalow in a very well maintained garden. It was a little dark inside and it only had a bed but at 80,000 rupiah a night including breakfast it was an awesome deal. We literally dropped our stuff and then walked to the beach front where we stopped at 'Hikmah Cafe' for something to eat. It was the usual case that Dean, Sam and I ordered the same dish, a giant salad bowl, whilst Andrew ordered noodle soup. However, the noodle soup turned out to be a pot noodle with a few vegetables thrown in and our giant salad bowl really was 'giant' although we got very little tuna. We chilled out in the beach hut for a while before Andrew, Dean and Sam went snorkeling. As Dean and Andrew had been snorkeling so much they had burnt their backs so they both wore a t-shirt and Dean wore a pair of Sam's leggings to protect the backs of his legs, but he then put his bright orange swimming shorts over the top. Therefore, he drew a fair bit of attention to himself, even though it did kind of look like he was wearing a wet suit. There were plenty of fish amongst the coral, which was less damaged than on Gili Trawangan, but the current was a pit off-putting as it was quite strong and therefore the water was a bit murky. Dean got out of the water and I noticed that his head was peeling so he set about picking off all the dead skin, which I got to sample as a bit ended up on my arm and a huge piece landed on Andrew's t-shirt! Sam and I sat and drank banana milkshake after banana milkshake for the rest of the afternoon before we went to get a shower.

The bathroom was fairly dark as a result of the energy saving light bulb and the shower was simply a cold water tap . However, it was fairly powerful and not all that cold. On the other hand, the self flush toilet didn't exactly flush and when you did try to flush it a powerful aroma filled the air! We managed to get ready and then walked to 'Zipp Bar' on the beach front. There was a selection of seafood on offer that was very tempting so we found a beach hut and ordered a drink. Andrew, Dean and I once more ordered the same dish, a tuna kebab that contained huge pieces of fish. We also got a baked potato and salad, but the salad never turned up so when the owner asked us if everything was alright with our meal we asked for the salad. It was clear that somebody was in the firing line as very soon after a huge plate of salad arrived at our table with an apology. We were that full that we didn't even think we could eat it, but Dean managed some of it so that we didn't feel as guilty. A cat came and sat near our hut and constantly whined until we threw it a piece of food, but it didn't even move to eat it. We came to realise that the poor thing was blind so we had to pretty much place the food right in front of it. There was a short power cut as we sat having a drink and Andrew came up with the bright idea of escaping without paying the bill. We sat and drank for a while before braving the dark walk through the coconut plantation to our bungalow. Our torch wasn't that bright and Sam was petrified she was going to encounter a snake. We survived the short walk and sat on Sam and Dean's veranda for the rest of the night.
