One more scam...

Senggigi, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia
We woke up early and got ready so that we were stood outside of Hotel Elen by 9:45am waiting for our free transfer to Bale Kampung. Andrew advised us against standing outside to avoid the hassle but I didn't want to miss our transfer and be stuck in Senggigi a moment longer than was necessary. However, he was right as the minute we were spotted the offers of transport began and I lost patience all too quickly as saying no to these people was pointless. In addition, every single taxi or bemo that went past pipped at us and even after saying no to an offer of transport they returned to check that we hadn't changed our mind. It reached 10:10am and there was still no sign of anybody even though we were supposed to be getting picked up at 10:00am. We couldn't wait any longer by the side of the road so I flagged down a Blue Bird taxi and the driver agreed to take us to Bale Kampung on the meter. It was only a short drive away and when we arrived we were shown one room that had a really dark bathroom, but another room upstairs had an open-air bathroom so we took it. We asked the price of the room and were told 100,000 rupiah which was also the price that was advertised on the website. We came to the conclusion that the man that had booked us a room the previous day was getting a 25,000 rupiah cut for himself. The place had WiFi so we had the chance to catch up with everyone on facebook and Alex had asked whether we fancied going to New Zealand. We both just looked at each other and without saying much else started researching the cost of a flight and camper van hire for a month. As much as we have loved Asia so far the hassle has recently took a toll on us and so we thought NZ would be a nice change before returning to Asia later in the year. A member of staff popped in to apologise as the owner had forgotten to pick us up and so we were refunded the cost of our taxi fare. We thought this was overly generous and felt a little guilty taking the money. Anyway, that guilt soon subsided as she returned a few minutes later to tell us that the price of the room was actually 125,000 rupiah, not 100,000 rupiah as she had told us earlier. We asked why but she didn't really have an answer. However, it soon became clear when we walked downstairs to the reception. The man who had reserved our room was stood at reception and immediately came to smother us. He had obviously came to demand his 25,000 cut and although we asked the owner why the price had suddenly changed we didn't get an answer and they still demanded we pay the 125,000 rupiah. The other man also tried to sell us a tour and wouldn't take no for an answer. Our Lombok experience was just getting worse and worse by the day! We ordered some food which was luckily reasonably priced as there was no other place close by to eat and we then just spent the rest of the day chilling out. The one good thing was that the bed was comfortable and the room was nice and bright.

We went to have a walk later but a member of staff followed us out and asked us where we going and whether we needed a free shuttle into Senggigi . There was no way we wanted to go back into the main town but we asked if there were any restaurants within walking distance. We were told there wasn't so we just decided to eat at Bale Kampung. However, I was served a deep fried chicken leg that was stone cold in the centre. We grabbed an Anker beer and sat on the rooftop planning our trip to NZ. We realised that it would take a fair chunk out of our budget but it would be well worth it in the end. We had another drink before we went to bed.
