Ko Phangan, Thailand
We woke up bright and early, got ready and packed our backpack ready to set sail for Ko Phangan. We checked out of 'Tropical Garden' and started walking to the pier. On the way we were asked whether we wanted transport in the form of a trolley, which involved somebody pulling our backpack for B50 each. We declined even though I was so hot and would have quite happily paid B50 if Andrew had allowed me, but we soon had a rest at 'Garlic 2' for breakfast. I didn't feel like eating but managed to eat some toast whilst Andrew had an 'American Breakfast' although the so-called ham looked dubious to say the least. We then called at a shop to buy food and drink supplies for the journey as we didn't think we would be stopping anywhere along the way. We reached the pier and the 'Wave Master' boat was ready and waiting so we got on board and sat on the top deck as it was yet another sunny day. We were amazed at how nice the weather was considering it was the rainy season. As we sat on the deck we watched the many fish in the sea swimming around the boat and Andrew eye-spied a large looking thing that scared away the small fish. We soon set off and reached Krabi port after a pleasant boat journey. Our minivan transfer was waiting for us at the port and we were taken to a bus station close by where we had to change onto a rather old and shabby looking coach. It then took around two hours to reach Don Sak port and we were glad to finally get off the bus as the air conditioning barely worked which meant the bus was extremely hot in the heat of the day. We only had a ten minute wait at the port where we bought a drink before we waked along the pier to our second boat of the day. We opted to sit inside in the cool air and the boat was pretty much empty. It was certainly clear that it was low season as earlier in the year there wasn't a single seat spare on any boat journey. The boat pulled up at Ko Samui where the majority of passengers alighted but we were soon cruising the sea again and shortly after we arrived at Ko Phangan. We collected our backpack and began walking along the pier until somebody shoved a leaflet in front of my face. I usually declined such an offer but I took it and had a quick look at the accommodation as we hadn't actually booked a place to stay. It looked very nice for the price as it offered a room for B200 within a resort that had a pool and private beach. I clearly looked impressed so the local lady that handed me the leaflet came over to talk to me about the place. We said we would have a look at it and so we got on a motorbike taxi. However, half way along the road the bike stopped at the side of the road as a pick-up truck belonging to the resort also stopped so we could get in the back. We still had to pay the motorbike taxi B100 each though which was completely unfair as they didn't even take us half way! Anyway we arrived at 'Haad Gruad Beach Resort & Spa' which was located on the north west coast down a very steep dirt track. The sun had just set so we couldn't really see the place very well but we were shown to a bungalow on the beach. It was pretty nice for the price and for B300 we even got hot water! We dropped our backpack and I went to check out the bathroom, just as a large black spider scuttled across the floor. This wasn't the end of the world until Andrew turned over a bucket in the bathroom and thousands of tiny spiders spread out across the floor! There had clearly been a nest underneath the bucket and so there was no way we could stay so we asked to move to a different room. The member of staff said it could be cleaned but we still wanted to move so we were shown to a different bungalow which wasn't on the beach but was in fact much nicer. We reckoned it should haver cost more but we were still only charged B300 per night. We went to the restaurant to get something to eat and there were actually a handful of people sat around the place. We both ordered a curry which took a while to be served but it was freshly made and of a high quality. We had a Chang and sat in the blowing wind for a while before returning to our room. I fell asleep straight away as I had a sore throat and felt as though I was getting a cold.
