Ko Phangan, Thailand
We got up and got ready before driving to Thongsala to our favourite place, 'Nira's Home Bakery' for something to eat. We totally indulged in the fresh bread and quality cheese, as Andrew had a feta and olive pita bread and I had a parma ham and mozzarella ciabatta. We drove back to our bungalow and sat by the pool. We then decided to make the mammoth journey across the island to Thong Nai Pan. We filled up on fuel and drove inland to find the road side lined with food stalls as it was the 'Half Year Festival'. We drove out the other end and in front of us was a huge rubber tree that was fourteen metres in diameter and hundreds of years old. The road began to get steeper and steeper and we saw a sign that claimed to be the last stop for fuel. A local even shouted at us to see if we wanted fuel but we drove on past. Andrew pulled a bemused face as a truck that had a monkey sat on the roof drove past us. The road turned into a very sandy dirt track and it became very difficult terrain as there were long downhill sections which meant a lot of braking. I was sure that we were going to end up skidding but Andrew did a pretty good job of controlling the moped. We then turned a corner to see work men busy laying concrete on the road! Andrew was particularly happy as the road was more manageable and we could pick up a bit of speed so that we would make it back before sunset. The journey took longer than we expected but the scenery was simply untouched jungle. We eventually reached the east coast and drove through 'Thong Nai Pan Yai' before crossing the headland to 'Thong Nai Pan Noi'. We had thought about staying on the east coast but it turned out to be mainly resort accommodation, which was way out of our price range. The sun was starting to set so we began the return journey, which turned out to be much easier. We stopped at the 'Night Market' in Thongsala and picked up some vegetable spring rolls but there was no chicken chest food stall so we bought corn on the cob instead. We made it back to our bungalow just as the sun was setting. I was craving something sweet so we went to our restaurant and I ordered a banana pancake which was huge and served with plenty of carnation milk. Andrew had his usual late night swim and then there was a power cut. It was lucky that I had the laptop on my knee as it gave us some light. There was an emergency light on in the restaurant so we grabbed the playing cards and had a seat. However, within a minute or so the emergency light also went off so we used our very dull torch light to make it back to our bungalow. We watched a film in bed as the light kept flickering on and off but never remained on for more than a minute. We were so hot as the power cut also meant we were without a fan. The power eventually returned just as we were about to go to sleep.
