The long flight...

Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
We woke up early and got a shower before walking to McDonald's for breakfast. We decided whilst eating to go to another shopping area in Bangkok as neither of us had managed to buy a coat. We had to first walk back to our guesthouse to pick up our bank card and to print off our electronic New Zealand work visa. We then caught a train to 'Sukhumvit' but we were a little disappointed to find that the so-called shopping area consisted mainly of street stalls selling tacky souvenirs, including all manner of sex toys. However, we luckily noticed 'Times Square' shopping mall across the street so we walked across a raised walkway to enter the place. It wasn't the best shopping mall as most of the shops were either closed or empty and there turned out to be no shops selling coats suitable for cold weather. We decided to keep on walking down the ridiculously long street, which in fact stretched all the way to Cambodia, as there was another shopping mall called 'Emporium' marked on our map. However, it turned out to be rather upmarket and it was full of posh Thai folk wandering around the designer outlets so we just had a quick look in a department store before we left with nothing. We had no choice but to go to New Zealand without a coat as we had to make our way to the airport. We caught a train back to our guesthouse and had a quick shower, as Andrew in particular was sweating after deciding to wear his new ultimately skinny jeans in thirty-five degree heat. I felt weird wearing jeans and a long-sleeved top as it was the first time I had done so since being in England. Once we were both ready we walked out to the main road and had no problem whatsoever in hailing a taxi who would happily use the meter to Suvarnabhumi airport.

We arrived at the airport after around forty minutes and no traffic jams so it wasn't too bad of a journey . The terminal building looked huge and there was more than one entrance, but in the end we just guessed and walked in via any old door. We found a departure information screen which said that our check-in desk was already open and although all Air Asia flights used the same desks the queues weren't too long. The member of staff gave us an instruction that we didn't understand and then our passports were given to the opposite check-in desk so we were a little unsure what was going on and whether or not there was a problem. Anyway, we were told that we had to take our baggage to a different desk as it was over-sized. We did as we were told, but wondered if we were about to be asked to pay an over-weight charge. It turned out we didn't as our backpacks were simply taken off us and we were then directed to our departure gate. We passed through immigration without a problem and we were stamped out of Thailand once again. Andrew then made us head straight for the obligatory airport Burger King which was right at the end of the building . We then walked back to where we started as I had spotted a bookstore so I bought a book to keep me entertained on the rather long flight. Andrew insisted on buying a bottle of SangSom but it turned out to be more expensive in the Duty Free shop than anywhere else in Thailand so he refused to part with his money.

It wasn't long before our boarding time so we went to sit at 'Gate F1' in preparation and I started to read my new book. We didn't have a seat sat next to each other even though we had checked-in three hours before our flight so we decided to wait until everyone else had boarded to try and get a seat together. Andrew, as usual, decided to make a trip to the toilet just as everyone was called to board the plane so that when he came back we were amongst the last few people to board. There was a spare seat next to Andrew so we managed to sit together in the end. I spent our last B50 on a hot Milo and before long the flight came to an end. It wasn't the best flight as it was rather bumpy and the pilot seemed to change altitude quite rapidly so that we both suffered ear pain. We got off the plane and entered Kuala Lumpur airport (LCCT), but we nearly missed the sign that directed us to our connecting flight. We weren't expecting much to be open in the departure gate as it was almost 10pm but we found a bar and ordered a pint. However, the price was a little shocking at seven pound a pint, especially considering it was flat! We were soon called to our gate and didn't have to wait too long before we were directed to our plane, which was a bit of walk away. We again waited until most other people had boarded the plane to see if we could get a seat together. We managed to do so and settled into our seat for the ten hours and fifteen minutes flight to Christchurch. It was a smooth take off and before long we were both drifting off.
