Nelson, South Island, New Zealand
Our alarm started beeping at 5:50am and it was still pitch black outside which made it particularly difficult to get up. Andrew started making porridge but we ran out of time so I just drank a bowl of milk before we started driving to the Bluebridge ferry terminal. We were told that the ferry may be cancelled due to rough sea but we were still directed to a queue until a decision was made about the crossing. It turned 8am, which was meant to be the ferry departure time, but we were just kept waiting in line until a member of staff came to inform us that the ferry wouldn't be leaving on time. It meant we had to sit tight for half an hour when another decision would be made based on the condition of the sea. It reached 9am before we were told that the ferry would not be leaving before 10am so we decided to go and get some breakfast at McDonald's as it was just over the road. We returned to our campervan but we were then told that the ferry wouldn't be leaving until 1:30pm! We didn't fancy sitting in the campervan any more so we left the queue and found a car park close to the shopping area in the city. I bought a nice thick woolly jumper and a belt whilst Andrew got annoyed as there were very few male clothing shops that were of a reasonable price. We returned to the Bluebridge ferry terminal for 12:30pm as instructed and we were directed straight through a gate. The member of staff simply pointed forward so we assumed we had to drive straight onto the ferry but we were soon chased after as we were just meant to park in a queue! We didn't have too long of a wait before we started to board the ferry. It was absolutely freezing on board so we immediately bought a hot drink and found a spare seat in front of the TV screen. Andrew had his first 'Flat White' but he wasn't a huge fan as it was too milky for his liking. We sat and watched a film called 'National Treasure' before going onto the top deck. It was a bit of a rough journey but we made it to Picton and began our journey to Nelson. On the way we noticed that we were running low on fuel but there wasn't a petrol station anywhere on route SH6. We eventually passed one but it closed at 5pm, even on a Saturday! We just made it to Nelson and so we went straight to a petrol stationto fill up. We turned up at 'Fern Lodge' just as Alex was dishing out spaghetti bolognese. We ate and then had a chilled out night before sleeping in the spare bunk bed which was a nice change to our campervan.
