The best road in NZ...

Westport, South Island, New Zealand
We woke up to the very unpleasant sound of a radio blasting at 6am! We got a quick shower and then said bye to Alex and Shane before driving to 'Neale Park' to park our campervan and make some porridge for breakfast. We got changed and brushed our teeth in the immaculately clean public toilet which felt a little strange. I then had my first attempt at driving our campervan but I literally drove it round in a circle. Once we had eaten I was brave enough to drive into Nelson city centre where I found a free car park spot. We climbed the steps to 'Christ Church' which was a grey art deco building. We walked around the shopping area where I bought a cheap pair of shoes to replace the pair of boots that had rubbed my feet to death. I encouraged Andrew to get a hair cut as we walked past a barber shop but he was too nervous, so he instead decided to flip a coin. The coin flip resulted in the decision to get his hair shaved off! We drove towards the 'Botanical Reserve' but we decided against the long walk to the centre of New Zealand. However, the view alone was pretty good as we saw the coastline and the whole of Nelson. We then drove to the 'World Of Wearable (WOW) Art & Classic Cars Museum' which had a cool little gallery of local art in the foyer. The 'WOW Art' section was pretty spectacular as each design was given a name based on the creative idea it tried to portray. We then moved into the 'Classic Cars' section and the first car we both noticed was the DeLorean, as seen on the film 'Back to the Future'. We were even allowed to sit inside the car, which made Andrew look quite like Dr. Brown with his wild, messy hair. There were quite a few cars displayed that had been used in famous films but the rest I had never seen before in my life. Andrew seemed to know every single detail about each car and was pleased that we had paid extra money to enter a different part of the 'Classic Cars Museum' that had many more cars on display.

We returned to our campervan and ate a cheese sandwich before we began driving to Westport . We drove along SH6 which turned out to be the most beautiful road trip ever. The road followed the 'Buller River' which started out as a narrow stream but got progressively wider. We made a stop at the 'Buller Gorge Swingbridge' where we bought a ticket for the tandem comet-line. We got to walk over the longest swingbridge in New Zealand which felt a little unsteady as we walked across it and both of us struggled to let go of the side to take a photograph! We reached the other side of the swingbridge and began the fifteen minute loop walk, which followed the famous 'White's Creek' fault-line. This was the epicentre of the 1929 Murchison earthquake where the ground instantaneously rose more than 4.5 metres. We managed to climb down to the 'Buller River' bed where the sand was so soft. We completed the loop walk and we then got strapped into a harness for the tandem comet-line that stretched 160 metres back across the gorge. I was a little scared at first but it wan't that fast even though Andrew caught his breath so began coughing vigorously as our photograph was taken at the end . We received a free photo disc and then set off to complete our journey to Westport. The scenery was magnificent and just as we reached Westport we saw a vivid, complete rainbow that topped off our journey. We both got pretty excited as we had never seen such a thing before, but we unfortunately didn't get chance to take a photograph. As we drove through Westport we soon came to realise that there wasn't much to see or do in the place. It was basically a grid system of housing and nothing much else! We drove past the Kiwi bus so knew that Alex and Shane were already in town. We found a campsite and paid for one night before we went to find a 'Fish & Chip' shop. We came across a liquor shop first so we bought a box of beer before asking for a take away recommendation. We were told about a place called 'Bonanza' which we had already drove past so we parked up and went inside to order a 'Fish & Chip' special. It was a pretty cheap deal at just under $12, which was around six pounds but we were sorely disappointed as we were served frozen chips. but that was apparently the norm in New Zealand. We ate in our campervan and had a couple of beers before we had an early night.
