Cape (NOT) Foulwind

Hokitika, South Island, New Zealand
We woke up and ate an English muffin for breakfast before we got ready. Andrew felt a little unwell and I had a pretty nasty cough so it took us a while to start our journey to Cape Foulwind. Andrew also had a nightmare whilst in the shower as every time he dried off the cleaner managed to spray him with water whilst hosing the bathroom floor! We eventually set off driving but spotted 'New World' supermarket so we called off to stock up on food before we arrived at Cape Foulwind. I put on every layer of clothing that I owned as the name of the place suggested it would be rather windy. We walked the short distance to the 'Seal Colony' where there was an informative display about seal activity within the colony. There were mainly baby seal pups scattered around the rocks and one or two larger seals that lay motionless while the pups played around. We decided to complete the 'Cape Foulwind Walkway' which followed the rugged coastline to a lighthouse. It was much further than we first anticipated but it was a picturesque walk and the sun was shining so it was a pleasant day. We were actually surprised at the lack of wind, considering Captain Cook named the place after his ship was blown out to sea due to the unpleasant weather. I actually ended up removing most of my layers as it was so hot, especially with the heat of the sun. We reached the lighthouse, which was a bit of a let down as the historic lighthouse had been replaced by a concrete one! Anyway, we began the return walk and just as we reached the 'Seal Colony' it began to pour down so we ran back to our campervan. We set off driving straight away along SH6 which followed the coastline. Andrew managed to kill a native bird as it simply ran out in front of our campervan as if it had a death wish. We had a short stop at 'Irimahuwhero Viewpoint' where we made something to eat.

It was such a scenic drive to Punakaiki where we stopped to view the so-called 'Pancake Rocks' . There was a short loop walk that led to a number of viewing platforms to show the very flat, thinly stacked pancake-layered rocks that dominated the area. Our next stop was Greytown where we went to 'The Warehouse' in search of ski clothing. I managed to buy a ski jacket but there were none in the correct size for Andrew which was annoying as they had a good discount on offer. Our final stop of the day was at a cosy town called Hokitika. We found a campsite which was the cheapest place yet at $26 per night. We drove into the town centre and found a place called 'Stumpers Bar & Cafe' where we sampled a local brew called Speight's. We returned to the campsite and made a pasta dish whilst we watched the end of a Harry Potter film. We managed to abuse an open WiFi connection which was a complete luxury as the cost of internet access in New Zealand was a small fortune. Once we had done everything online we headed off to bed.
