Lake Kaniere

Franz Josef, South Island, New Zealand
We got up and got ready before making breakfast which caused Andrew quite a bit of stress as there wasn't a toaster. We ate and then drove to a historic lighthouse which looked in desperate need of a lick of paint. It looked so pitiful that I didn't even bother to get out of the campervan to view the thing! We found a free car park spot in the town centre and we then walked along the black sand and pebble beach. The sea was pretty rough and it was quite a grey day but the walk was nice. There was quite a lot of driftwood on the beach and when we reached the end there was a shipwreck memorial. The reconstruction of the 'Tambo' stood as a memorial to the forty-two ships that were wrecked whilst trying to cross the Hokitika bar. The Tambo was beached on the 12th November 1886 and the crew managed to secure her to an old anchor found buried in the sand, but she was soon swept back out to sea. We then cut inland to follow the 'Heritage Trail' which led along the quay side. There was an information board but it had seen better days which meant that the text was pretty difficult to read. We did end up at a 'Customs House' which was built in 1897 and was situated on the quay. We walked back to our campervan through the town centre where we passed a clock tower.

We set off driving to Lake Kaniere which was a short drive inland . We didn't see a single ripple on the surface of the lake as the water was so still. There was a wooden boardwalk which offered the perfect photograph opportunity with such a beautiful back-drop. We drove a little further around the edge of the lake to 'Dorothy Falls' which was quite a high waterfall. We continued on our journey along SH6 on route to Franz Josef. We made a stop at a small shop to buy some bread but we were also tempted by the home-made cake selection. It cost a small fortune as the shop was in the middle of nowhere but we thoroughly enjoyed every bite as we ate overlooking a turquoise river. It wasn't long before we reached the small town of Franz Josef where we enquired at a campsite but we for once decided to check out the competition. We made the right decision as the price was $4 cheaper per night at 'Rainforest Retreat' and it was in a much nicer setting. The friendly English owner directed us to 'Site 21' where we parked up before ringing Alex to find out where we had to pay for our glacier trek. The place was a short walk away and we bumped into the Kiwi bus people on the way . Shane then appeared without Alex who was sleeping and so we all decided to contribute to a shared meal. We paid for our glacier trek and we were given a wristband to wear that allowed us free access to the glacier hot pools. We returned to our campsite and made a hot drink in the kitchen area whilst watching the film 'Toy Story 3'. We then went to meet Alex and Shane so that we could book our accommodation in Queenstown.

We headed to 'Monsoon Bar' which was part of 'Rainforest Retreat' so we didn't have to walk too far. Alex and I ordered something to eat as we didn't fancy the noodle dish that somebody was cooking for the group. We had a couple of drinks whilst the men played 'Killer Pool' only for a woman to win much to our amusement. Alex managed to fall over on the gravel outside which resulted in a badly scraped knee and elbow that drew blood. We headed off to bed at around midnight as we had an early rise the following day.
