Reflection Island

Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand
Andrew woke up at 7:20am and couldn't get back to sleep so we both got up and got ready. We were sorely disappointed as it was a glorious day without a single cloud in the sky so a perfect day for a glacier trek! Anyway, we drove to the 'Franz Josef Glacier Lookout' just to catch a glimpse in the nice weather. However, it didn't really reflect the sheer size of the glacier and so we were quite annoyed that we were unable to take any close-up photographs the previous day. It was a short walk back to our campervan and we then drove to 'Lake Matheson' which was near Fox Glacier. As we were driving the road ahead became blocked by a herd of sheep! We parked our campervan and then walked across the 'Clearwater River' suspension bridge. The river water was brownish under the bridge as was the water of 'Lake Matheson' as a result of leeching from the surrounding forest floor. We decided to complete the loop walk which took around an hour. It was such a beautiful lake and as it was a calm day the mountains to the east were perfectly reflected in the lake. The track led through ancient native forest, including tall rimu and kahikatea trees, to a pontoon that extended out onto the lake aptly named 'Reflection Island'. We made it back to the car park and then drove to the 'Fox Glacier Lookout' for a quick stop. Our journey then continued down the west coast to 'Knights Point Lookout' where we stopped for something to eat.

I fell asleep so Andrew had to continue the journey to Wanaka without my company . We found a campsite and then drove to 'New World' supermarket to stock up on food. We made a quick meal of pasta and sauce and then drove to 'Cinema Paradiso' but we just missed the last showing of the evening, so we decided to just have an early night and we were probably asleep by 9pm!
