Fergburger

Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand
We got up and managed to get ready in the rather dirty bathroom before we made breakfast. We drove to the lake front as I sat and cried because I couldn't brush my hair! We decided to make our way to 'Puzzling World' which had some crazy architecture, including four 'Tumbling Towers' and the 'Leaning Tower of Wanaka' that balanced on one corner at a fifty-three degree angle. We paid for our ticket and then entered the 'Illusion Rooms'. The first section was a 'Hologram Hall' followed by the 'Ames Forced Perspective Room'. The technique of the Ames illusion was also used in 'The Lord of the Rings' film to create tall people and little people. The shape of the room was totally distorted although when viewed from outside through a window the room looked perfectly normal. As Andrew walked from one corner to the next he appeared to grow taller and then smaller when he walked the other way. We then moved into the 'Hall of Following Faces' where one hundred and sixty eight giant models of famous faces seemed to turn and follow us around the room. The next illusion was called the 'Tilted House' because it was tilted at an angle of fifteen degrees, but all of the displays inside were normal. However, the illusion was so strong that our brain straighted up the room so it seemed as though the displays all hung at impossible angles. The room actually made me feel quite sick so I had to get out! We had a quick look around the gift shop and then had a hot drink and a piece of fake chocolate cake in the cafe before we tackled the outdoor 'Great Labyrinth Maze'. It was made up of 1.5km of passages and it was much harder than it looked, as it took us about an hour to complete! We had to find our way to each corner of the square maze and then back to the start but we got too frustrated so we took the emergency exit after finding each corner. We then began the short drive to Queenstown.

We arrived at Queenstown and I directed us to 'Bungi Backpackers' which looked a little grim . It was quite run down and I wasn't best pleased when we were handed our key to 'The Garden Shed'. As suggested by the name, our room was not in the main building but outside which meant that we had to walk through the garden, kitchen and then along the corridor to go to the toilet! Alex and Shane soon turned up and they had the same thought about the place. However, on the plus side there was a hot tub outside situated in what looked like a rabbit hutch! We walked into the town centre and stopped at a 'Food Court' for something to eat. We then called into 'info&track' where we booked a two day beginners snowboarding package to start the following day. We were then kitted out in ski wear before we walked back to our hostel. Alex had enquired at YHA about a room and they had some availability so we got a refund at 'Bungi Backpackers' and went to pay for nine nights at YHA. We had been told about the infamous 'Fergburger' so we stood in the rather long queue for a huge burger that Andrew and I shared as we weren't really that hungry. It was so nice though and so we wished we had got one each in the end. We drove back to our rather nasty hostel and sat in the dining area to play 'Black Jack' and have a few drinks before bed.
