Disaster Day

Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand
We woke up to our 6am alarm and sleepily crawled out of bed. We were both aching a fair bit after our first day of snowboarding the previous day. I fell asleep on the bus so Andrew had to wake me up when we arrived at the Cardrona ski field. We collected our snowboard and then made our way to the practice slope. I managed to complete the slope without falling over once, which filled me with confidence so I got straight back on the carpet. My second attempt wasn't quite as successful as I fell hard on my bottom. I was about to give up but I gave it one more try, but as I was turning I fell back over. I knew immediately that I had really hurt my wrists as they had gone numb but stung at the same tine. I just lay in excruciating pain until Andrew came over to me and told me that I couldn't lie on the floor all day! I told him that I couldn't feel my wrists but he just told me to get up. We then made our way to the 'Medical Centre' where I was shown to a bed as a nurse began to examine my injury. I was told immediately that my left wrist was broken but my right wrist wasn't as obvious as there was less swelling. I was given ice packs to place on both wrists and some pain relief. Andrew and I began to worry about the cost of the medical care as our insurance didn't cover snowboarding. I sat and cried through the pain as well as praying for my right wrist to be intact. The doctor then came to examine me and I was told that I had to either wait until the bus left at 4:15pm or get a taxi to Wanaka which would cost $200, which was around one hundred and twenty pound! The nurse got Andrew and I a hot chocolate whilst we debated our next move. However, a lovely lady came along and said she would try and arrange transport for us to Wanaka as well as a refund for our lift pass and snowboarding lesson. She returned with $280 cash which we didn't expect at all and she said she was still on the look out for transport. There was a young girl in the bed next to me who had also broken her wrist and she must have overheard us as she offered to give us a lift to Wanaka.

We arrived at 'Wanaka Lakes Health Centre' and I was soon called into a consultation room . I decided to get both my left and right arm x-rayed just in case. The doctor then showed me my left wrist x-ray which was clearly fractured but I was told there should be no complication. I was very lucky as my right wrist was fine. The nurse put a rather heavy plaster cast on my left wrist and then the doctor moulded it into position, which only hurt a bit! I was given a prescription for pain relief and then paid the bill before waiting for a lift into Wanaka by the helpful, friendly New Zealand family. We got dropped off at the i-site where we were told it would cost $40 for a bus to Queenstown. We had spent enough cash already so we decided to get dropped off at the Cardrona ski field so that we could catch our original bus back to Queenstown.

I was desperate for a hot shower once we got back to our hostel but I struggled more than I thought as I couldn't really move my right wrist. Andrew had to help me get dressed before he took back our snowboarding equipment. I later realised that Andrew had put my engagement ring in his ski jacket pocket! We had an early night as I was in pain and I couldn't do much other than lie in bed.
