Shotover Jet

Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand
We had a late morning after Andrew made us a bacon sandwich for breakfast, but we only ventured as far as our campervan. We returned to our hostel and saw Alex so we set off walking towards 'Queenstown Gardens' to play 'Frisbee Golf'. However, we had a slight problem in that we couldn't find a Frisbee! We ended up at an ice rink where we stood around for a while before we realised that we didn't actually have enough time to play as we had to go and check-in for our jet boat ride. We started walking to 'The Station' but we were tempted into 'Patagonia' for an ice-cream where Shane had a giggle as we ordered a 'Hokey Pokey' in a Geordie accent! We checked-in for our jet boat ride and had a seat as we waited for our shuttle bus to the 'Shotover River'. The bus driver took one look at my wrist and asked how recent the brake was as he seemed concerned by the fact I had signed up to jet boating! He admittedly put me off a little but I asked another member of staff and they claimed that many other people in my situation did it without any problem. We were then all given a long, black waterproof cape and a life jacket, so Andrew had to help me get dressed as usual. I strapped my broken wrist underneath my life jacket so that it wouldn't get thrown around as much, or so I hoped anyway. We climbed into the jet boat and Brett our driver gave us one simple instruction that was to hold on to the heated handrail! Brett began to move the boat through the canyon and Alex began to scream! It went much faster than‎ I thought it would and the wind almost blew my hat off. Andrew complained that his head and face were freezing, more so because he had no hair and Alex laughed hysterically as his ear lobes flapped around aggressively in the wind! The ride was pretty extreme as the 'Shotover Canyon' walls towered above us and Brett whipped the boat past rocky outcrops and almost skimmed boulders and bits of wood sticking out of the water. We paused for a while so that Brett could explain to us a little bit about the operation of the jet boat. It had a maximum speed of up to 85kph and could travel in as little as 10cm of water. We could see just how shallow the water was in the canyon as it was crystal clear. We began moving again as Brett gave the signal that we were about to do a full 360° spin. I gripped onto the hand rail for comfort and reassurance as the boat spun fully around at a fast speed. We continued to whizz through the canyon and did a fair few spins before the final one resulted in the boat dipping so low that water spilled over the top! We thanked Brett and then we walked to the gift shop where we all got a free photo as we had a $20 voucher to spend. We also bought one copy of the video to share amongst us.
We got the shuttle bus back to Queenstown and called at a supermarket to buy the necessary stuff to cook a roast dinner, since it was 'National Roast Day' in New Zealand . Alex and Andrew made the best roast lamb dinner and we all had second helpings to ensure we were well and truly full. We then had an early night as Andrew and Alex had to get up early the following day.
