Avalanche Zone

Milford Sound, South Island, New Zealand
I was woken up at 8:30am by a surprise alarm as Andrew had failed to inform me of his early morning plan, even though we did not have to check out of our hostel until 10am. I wasn't particularly happy but we did have a fair bit of stuff to pack up so I got up and got ready whilst Andrew went to a supermarket. However, I failed to pack anything as my wrist hurt too much so Andrew was in charge of packing as well as making our breakfast. We ate fried eggs on toast and then placed all of our baggage in the hostel luggage room before walking to 'Patagonia' to meet Alex and Shane for a coffee. Adam and Finlay turned up so we all walked to 'Fergburger' as Shane wanted one last one before he left Queenstown. Andrew and I decided to go and collect our campervan whilst everyone else was eating and we found a parking spot outside of YHA so we didn't have to carry our luggage very far. Alex and Shane piled into the back and we then drove to the airport to drop them off and say goodbye. On the way out of the airport Andrew somehow managed to take a wrong road so we did a huge circle before finding the correct road to Milford. However, after driving for a short while I asked whether there was sufficient petrol in the tank, which there wasn't, so we decided to turn around as we didn't want to take the risk after one close encounter on a New Zealand "highway" where the petrol station closed at 5pm on a Saturday! We hadn't actually driven too far so we filled up and then set off once again for Milford.

I was quite surprised to find that the road journey caused my broken wrist quite a lot of pain, not because the road was particularly bumpy, but just because my arm moved up and down steadily . We had to call at a shop to buy a drink so that I could take some pain relief to help me through the journey! We shortly arrived at 'Te Anau' which was a quaint little town. Andrew had a stroke of ingenuity as he suggested we stock up on food as we knew Milford was pretty small, so we called off at 'Fresh Choice' supermarket. We bought the cheapest tin of Watties pasta sauce as we were seriously having to count the pennies after checking our dreaded bank balance. We were soon back on the road and as we passed through the beautiful 'Eglinton Valley' a prominent sign alerted us to the fact that we had entered an avalanche zone, much to our delight. The landscape suddenly became very mountainous and snow became the norm, as apparent by the white stuff piled high at the road side. The road was extremely windy yet spectacular and led to the 'Homer Tunnel' which was 1270 metres long and passed through a mountain. It was really dark upon entering the tunnel and it took a little too long for our eyes to adjust as the beaming sun had been reflecting off the snow for quite some time. We made it to 'Milford Sound Lodge' where we paid a hefty $44 for a campsite, which was clearly because it was the only campsite near 'Milford Sound'. We made a hot drink and then Andrew cooked hot dogs along with fried onions and Heinz tomato sauce! I had a nice hot shower before bed as we had to get up early the following day.
