127kph

Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand
We woke up to our 7:30am alarm and immediately packed up the camper bedding before heading over to the kitchen to make breakfast. There were a lot of other campers doing a one night stop off and so everyone had spare food to put in the free food box. The previous day we had taken advantage of the free Cadbury hot chocolate and jar of jam, but when we returned after the kitchen had been cleaned the free food box was completely empty! Anyway, we returned to our campervan and drove to the dump station to throw away a fair bit of stuff. Andrew then dropped me off at the car rental office before he returned Hector to Escape. I sat and read a book for what seemed like forever before Andrew finally made it back, as he had to wait longer than expected for a bus to turn up. We paid the ridiculously low price of $15 for a rental car as it was a relocation special, which meant we were expecting a bit of a banger. However, we were led to a decent Ford Focus which was a nice surprise as was the gear box as it turned out to be an automatic. Andrew had never driven an automatic before but it didn't take too much getting used to as it only involved remembering not to change gear. We were soon driving north along SH1 and making good time. We stopped for a sandwich that Andrew had made earlier in the day but we needed a drink so we called off at a supermarket in 'Kaikoura'. We were both sucked into buying the Mars bar special offer and Andrew even won a free bar. We were half way to 'Blenheim' when a police car travelling in the opposite direction turned around to follow us and it was obvious that Andrew had been travelling above th speed limit. The officer was pretty chilled out which stupidly made Andrew think he would be let off with a warning. However, the fact that he was going 127kph in a 100kph zone meant that he was given a $230 fine. The fine increased as the speed increased so if he had been going just 3kph more he would have been issued a fine for $400. I wasn't best pleased as our cash fund was starting to run pretty low! Andrew made sure he drove at 100kph for the rest of the journey which was lucky as we saw a number of other police cars on the road.
We arrived at 'Blenheim' but Andrew had failed to find out the location of a particular hostel so we drove around aimlessly for a while before making our way to the town i-SITE. We were given a map and so we drove to the hostel to find out the price of a double room for one week. We had spotted some other places whilst driving so we priced them up to find out the best deal. In the end we got a double room at 'The Grapevine' as it was the cheapest but it was also geared towards people wanting to work in Blenheim. We piled all of our stuff into our new home and then Andrew drove the rental car to Blenheim airport. However, there was no shuttle bus running so he had to get a taxi back to town which wasn't exactly cheap. We then had a walk to 'New World' supermarket to stock up on food for the week. We returned and began cooking in the kitchen only to find a small mouse run across the kitchen floor. I was totally distraught and was wary of touching anything! We sat down to eat a nice steak and then chilled out for the rest of the evening.
