Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Our alarm went off at 6:30am and so we had time for a quick shower before we packed our stuff and walked to Sinh Cafe. We had a short wait for our bus to turn up but barely any people got on board so we took a double seat each. It wasn't long before we stopped for a thirty minute break at a random road-side restaurant that was pretty rank as usual. As we hadn't eaten breakfast we were quite hungry yet the only option was a pot noodle or snack food. We weren't sure when we would stop again so we got a pot noodle but it was swimming in water so it tasted of absolutely nothing. Andrew then went to buy me some Oreo's whilst I went to the filthy toilet. I returned to find him in a fluster as he had been ripped off! He was charged 55,000 dong for each pot noodle which was the usual price of a cooked meal in Vietnam! The Oreo's were also four times the usual price but even more annoying was the fact that he was initially short changed by 100,000 dong until he just shook his head in disgust. It was yet another prime example of the Vietnamese charging a rather inflated "tourist" price. We drove a few more hours down the road before reaching 'Mui Ne' where we had another thirty minute break. We found a cheap restaurant so ordered a plate of spring rolls and a drink. The bus soon filled up as people got on board at 'Mui Ne' so Andrew had to snuggle up next to me. We made a final thirty minute break before continuing the journey to 'Saigon'. We didn't actually realise just how long the journey took and we certainly weren't prepared as it took twelve hours in the end! We both became pretty restless as we approached 'Saigon' as there was a never-ending traffic and so we crawled into the city. It was dark by the time we were dropped off outside of Sinh Cafe but our hotel was only a short walk away. We had only walked a few metres down the road when we were offered marijuana! We had a little difficulty finding our hotel, even though the Rough Guide stated that it was tucked down an alleyway. A Vietnamese lady offered her assistance but I politely declined as I assumed the sale of something was her true motive. I was pleasantly surprised when she came over to us as we stood looking at our map and again simply offered some help. We told her the name of our hotel and she said she would show us the way. We were so grateful as she led us down the correct alleyway to the door of our hotel and then unobtrusively gave us a tour brochure without another word. The staff at the 'Ngoc Minh' hotel were hyper-active from the minute we stepped through the front door. One lady couldn't stop laughing at Andrew even though he didn't say one funny thing. She showed us to our room, via a lift, which was pleasant enough and then took us to the rooftop garden and seating area. She was over-excitable once again as she grabbed my recovering broken arm and dragged me to a swinging seat. I smiled politely as I managed the pain in my arm! Andrew then had a quick shower before we went to 'Pizza' Hut' as all we had eaten all day was the crappy pot noodle. The waiter told us that our pizza would take seventeen and a half minutes to cook! We returned to our hotel and watched 'The Hangover' as we had cable TV in our room!
