Sightseeing in the Rain

Polignano a Mare, Puglia, Italy
At the beginning of the day, it was looking like another day of food and sun, but when Babbo was laying out in the shade, and we left the beach before 2 PM I knew something was up.

After the beach, everyone got all dressed up and we got in the car and started driving . It wasn't a long drive, but I was tired and fell asleep... Shocking, I know. When we got there I woke up and it was raining. Thankfully we brought 3 umbrellas from the Borgo.

We were in Polignano A Mare, and we were going to eat at the famous cave restaurant. The only problem was it was only about 4 and our reservations weren't until 7:30 so there was talk of heading back to the hotel and calling it a day. We ended up sticking it out, and were rewarded for doing so, although not right away.

After a little it started raining really hard and we had to take refuge in a restaurant in a piazza; At least that was the plan. They had limited seating that wasn't in the rain, so, while we were out of the rain, there was a river running through the patio directly under our table. I didn't mind, my feet were nowhere near the ground, but Babbo's shoes got soaked, and Nonna and Mom were wearing sandals so, they weren't loving it .

Our waiter at the restaurant was named Angelo. After he came by the first time, Nonna said he was Angelo, in name only (He was kind of rude). After a while though we realized he just had a really sarcastic personality and he ended up being the highlight of our lunch.

Once the rain slowed a bit we headed back out. It didn't take long for us to realize why everyone says this place is so beautiful. It was only about a 2 minute walk through the narrow alleys of the old section of Polignano A Mare, and we were on the cliff overlooking the most amazing view. The buildings of the city were hanging off the cliffs over the bright turquoise ocean. Of course Dad took a bunch of pictures.

After a little more exploring and a couple drinks at a little wine bar, it was time for dinner. We waited out front for the restaurant to open with about 30 other people. Finally they opened the doors and we were directed down about 4 flights of stairs to the restaurant. Walking out onto the deck of the restaurant it was clear that this was going to be a very special dinner (so special, I didn't even fall asleep).

We were sat at a table right on the edge of the deck over looking the ocean, Although, I have to say even the tables in the back of the cave had an amazing view (Dad has pictures of both). The food was very good, in fact Babbo said his pasta was the best he had ever had other than my Nonna's of course.

After dinner we grabbed a quick frappe and gelato (I even got to eat some), and then got in the car to drive home. The drive home was not fun though. It started off with Dad sending Babbo down a one way street (too many glasses of wine I guess), but that wasn't the "not fun" part... That came when I just wanted to sleep but everyone kept messing with me, so I would stay awake and be able to sleep when we got back to the villa. It must have worked because I passed right out, which is why this blog is going out a little later than normal.

We are heading out right now for Altamurra, Materra and Alberobello (we cram all our sightseeing into one day to maximize sun time). So you can look forward to hearing all about that tomorrow.
