Saffron Farm - Week Two

Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Montedinove, Marche, Italy
Never a dull moment. There is always something to do or that needs to be done here in the saffron farm. Every day is different. Our schedule is determined by "the flowers" . On a busy day we might pick more than 6000 flowers. On the slower day, we might pick 400 or 500 flowers. There are always two harvests of the flowers each day; one at 6:15 am as the sun is just peaking over the tops of the hills, another harvest some time after lunch. After the first picking, we eat a breakfast of porridge and fresh fruit with honey.

At about 10:30 am each morning we break for a coffee or tea . Lunch at 1:30 p.m. is the main meal of the day. Often we eat a saffron infused recipe or a pair of volunteers will create a meal with whatever is on hand. It is always good food and very seldom are there leftovers. Everyone is always hungry. After lunch we break for an hour or more, then work for two more hours, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Like the first week new volunteers are arriving every couple of day and some are leaving for their next Workaway or to continue their travels to all points of the compass. This week two new young women from Ireland, Gracie and Libby arrived. They have traveled for several months to Israel the Middle East. They are interested in circus schools and have trained in several locations. Gemma from the UK and Laura from German left for other assignments and travel in the Tuscany region.

At the end of the second week Andrew and Elin (from Chicago) left to travel some more in Italy and the UK. Then they are headed back to the Midwest for the Holidays and the rest of their lives. Gracie and Libby from Ireland left this week for further travels in Italy. Georgia is on her way to Berlin and the UK, and then back home to Australia in a week or so.

In just a few short day we have all become fast friends. Much joy and laughs are shared. This is what the United Nations should be like.

What a great experience ... once in a life time opportunity ... you have clearly left your comfort zone and are experiencing what comes your way. It takes great strength and character... (envy you the opportunity) ... enjoy!

Alice & Patrick the writing and photos are fascinating ... ...very special... Love, MI
