Serendipity wins

Delhi, India
Today was a lazy morning, as mornings in goa should be. By the time we had breakfast, it was past 9 and we had to leave for airport around 11. Neither here nor there, ambled to the beach and everyone looked lost as to what to do for an hour and a half.

We figured we'd take a walk on the beach. As we took some lazy steps, we saw an old man walk to the sea with a fishing rod in his hand! Crazy - the man expects to fish in the oncoming waves...

Further ahead, we saw a volleyball court on the beach. There was a willing person renting a ball. Hey, this was suddenly looking like a possible fun ending to the trip! We had a couple of good games of beach volleyball, with all the attendent dives and leaps! 10:15 - time to head back. This was a bonus surprise on the closing moments of our trip.

As we were walking back, we saw the old man walking back with his prized catch. The guy had actually managed to catch a decent fish amongst the breaking waves!

I have always wondered what makes these all-boys trips special. And it struck me that it is in allowing for enough uncertainty to be surprised. Unlike family vacations where the tour is set before you leave, these trips are a melange of serendipitous experiences. Be it our little mountain climb, or the photo shoot at the beach, or this morning's game of volleyball. And the old man was doing exactly the same - he allowed himself enough risk to be positively surprised. In travel and perhaps in life, eventually, serendipity wins.

Good bye Goa, see you again.
