Overnight at the Hilton Hyde Park
Overnight was difficult.
I had to crawl out of the foot of bed or over Philip to get up. Neither worked well for me.
I asked for an upgrade from the clerk on duty and got the usual line. “We don’t know what we’ll have tonight.” She was going to ask someone else so I asked to speak to the manager who did come out, and she wasn’t sure either if they would have another room available. I did make it clear as nicely, yet firmly as possible that the room was not up to my expectations of a Hilton quality room. She was adamant that we wait in the room for an unknown amount of time until she knew if there was going to be a better room open. That wasn’t good enough. We’re in London for a short time, and I don’t want to spend it in the hotel room.
Anyway, we agreed she’d know by between noon and 3 p.m. Philip and I left to go shopping at one of his favorite stores, Charles Tyrwhitt on Jermyn Street. He found four shirts and some socks that are just right.
When we returned to the hotel after shopping, I checked again, and they did have a room to show us. It’ll be fine for the next two nights. Room 311 is still small but perfectly fine with a normal size bed in the middle of the room. That crawling into bed from the foot is something that should not be expected of adults.
We walked to dinner at the Windsor Castle pub about fifteen minutes from the hotel. As usual, it looked like we were the only diners that early for our 6:30 reservation. Service and food were both fine.
