Kentucky History Day

Frankfort, Kentucky, United States
Another Hampton Inn breakfast this morning then a little bit of extra time in the room before leaving for our first stop, the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center which opened at 10:00.
Walked through the Pioneer Graveyard behind the museum while waiting for it to open. Did not find any Calvins there although the time period was right.
Inside, we found Cay, a friendly archivist, who was eager to show us around the Research Library and then pull all the right documents for Philip’s research on the Calvin family.  He found a few interesting pieces to add texture to his research report.
Once finished with research, we spent a little bit of time walking through the museum.  Their focus is a large collection of miniatures donated from one person’s collection which covered previous and current time periods.  The history section was somewhat interesting, but did not provide anything unusual or new to us.
Looking for lunch was our next activity finding Buck’s Grill after winding around and up and down the narrow streets of the old part of Maysville.  I did manage to back the Highlander into a spot in the tiny parking lot with much encouragement and coaching from Philip.  The driver in the huge pickup parked next also offered reassurance that the vehicle was fine.  Lunch was okay.  We both had the house favorite of brisket cheeseburgers with grilled onions and a side of coleslaw.  The sandwiches tasted okay but there was no barbecue sauce.  Hmm?  The coleslaw was delicious — just the right blend of sweet and tangy that I like.
Next we got back on the road toward Louisville stopping first in Frankfort for the last bit of genealogy research.  In Frankfort, we visited the Kentucky Historical Society’s Kentucky History Center where they were celebrating Kentucky History Day.  We arrived about 3 in the afternoon so most of the special events of the day were over, but there were still a lot of people in and around the museum including a contingency of Army Jeeps and bigger vehicles parked along the front of the building.  We went upstairs to the genealogy library for Philip to use their research materials.
When he was finished, we drove another hour to Louisville for the night at the Hilton Garden Inn Louisville Airport.
