Following the Rhine to Rudesheim

Rüdesheim am Rhein, Hesse, Germany
The internet wasn't working again this morning, so after breakfast (once again included in the price, and had all the goodies) we wandered along the 'promenade' with our bags before catching the 9.13 train to Singen. It was a lovely morning.

The train connections all worked well - arrived at Singen at 10 and then left for Frankfurt at 10 .34. This was the Black Forest Scenic route, as far as Offenburg anyway. The Black Forest wasn't what I expected - a lot more farming going on. But the forests were thick beyond the fields. Very nice. Saw a cute covered bridge at Immendingen - no pic, sorry.

Arrived at Frankfurt at 14.40 and then caught a VIA train to Rudesheim am Rhein. I hadn't come across a VIA train before, but it was okay and included in the Eurail pass. It goes back and forth on the east (north) bank of the Rhine between Frankfurt & Koblenz.

Arrived at Rudesheim at 16.34. Should be plenty of time to have a ride in the cable car and have a walk around before dinner ....... But no, not to be. Great little town. Greeted at the hotel with a free glass of wine, but then the internet wouldn't work in our room. After trying different things, we went back to reception. We ended up with an upgraded room (well it was 2 rooms) above the restaurant . Rushed off to explore, but by the time we got to the cable car it was 18.15 and closed.

"A highlight of any stay in Rüdesheim is the ride in a cable car up to the Germania monument. The awe-inspiring panoramic views over Rüdesheim's old town and the shimmering waters of the Rhine dotted with green isles make the smooth glide over the vineyards a very special
experience. The station at the base can be found in the pedestrianised area on Oberstrasse" and was only 30 metres from our hotel. Oh well - we'll be back another time I hope. There is a longer cable car + ferry ride etc that looks fantastic.

Enjoyed walking around and catching a bit of the soccer - Australia was playing Netherlands - at one of the cafes with a big screen. Watched a bit more back at the hotel, where we found out that the internet password we were given only lasted for 3 hours and was only for one phone. After watching more of the match with some Dutch people, we went back out to have dinner. Bryan had venison and I had some sort of pickled beef - they were okay, but not brilliant.

And some how or other we missed the free wine tasting.
