Looking out our bedroom window at Jungfrau

Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland
Can I remember back to yesterday morning?

We got away early and bought a couple of cheap and yummy (not too crusty!) rolls on the way to the station and caught the 7 .46 train to Basel. Then an InterCity train from there to Thun. This train had a monitor in the carriage showing the stations and the speed. We were going at 196km per hour a lot of the time! That's too fast to see very much - but gets you there quickly.

We arrived at Thun at 10.21 and the boat didn't leave until 11.40, so we had time for a wander around the garden and up and across the river.

We decided that the weather was too dicey to do my planned "up in the cable car, across in the train, walk down to the town with no cars, another cable car, and then a bus" [see map], so we did the complete lake cruise to Interlaken West. Train to Interlaken Ost.

Arrived to get the 14.05 train to Lauterbrunnen - what's this? "Eurail Pass not valid."  Had to pay €11.60 for the fare. Not sure how I missed this - will check tonight.

Only took 21 minutes to get there and hostel was closed til 3 pm . But we could leave our luggage. Had a wander, then checked in. Plan B (after my major plan) was to visit Trummelbach Falls - so we walked back to the station/bus stop and replenished the Swiss Francs at a bank ATM. Just as well we did as the bus to Trummelbach Falls was over 14 Swiss francs (for two, return); and then it was €11 each to get into the Falls. No cards - cash only.

The falls were absolutely fabulous. Bryan thinks they cost too much, but I reckon they were well worth the price (it was the bus and train prices that annoyed me). The falls - the photos I took can't do them justice. The sound is VERY LOUD; because of the recent rain, I suppose, there was water dripping everywhere; it was out of this world. The bus left Lauter. about 16.05 and we ran and managed to get on the 17.17 to go back (would have had to wait til 18.17 otherwise). But I think the hour (well almost) was enough. We caught the left to level 6, then walked up to level 10 (the top); walked back to the lift, but didn't take it; walked backed to the ground level. Was brillliant!

"The Trümmelbach Falls are the world's only glacier waterfalls that are
accessible underground by lift, galleries, tunnels, paths and platforms.
They alone carry the meltwater of the glaciers from the Jungfrau down
to the valley - up to 20,000 liters of water per second. The water
carries with it over 20,000 tons of boulders and scree per year and
causes the entire mountain to shudder and make a thundering noise.'
