Riding the rails

Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany
Good breakfast. We'd stay at Hotel Melantrich, Prague again even though it's up stairs. But close to the old town and not a bad price at €72 including breakfast with all the trimmings. I still can't face pickles for breakfast! But there is so much else to eat, I can ignore them.

Lovely and crisp weather walking back to the station . The first class section of this train (EC354 for Munich) is small - about half a carriage. There were a lot of seats reserved , so we sat in the ones reserved for old people (or ill or pregnant). We have the whole four seats to ourselves - so far. The train is now running 50 minutes late, due to engine trouble. We picked up a new engine at Plzen - we now know we are the first carriage! A bit of laughter in the carriage over this.

Near Furth Im Wald we saw 2 giant structures on top of the range - the silhouettes were like a man and a woman. Have to google. Went through Domazlice at 11.45 and through Furth Im Wald at 12.10.

Just before Schwandorf the train must've gone around a corner a bit fast. The stack of suitcases was on the move! Those 4 - wheelers. They took off across the corridor towards us. Bryans and mine slid off the side/back, and Bryans boot pulled up the grey Japanese one. The whole carriage 'got together' again over this incident . Now we're aĺl quiet - no, there's a bit of consternation, we're going backwards! One of those stations!

**We haven't had internet that worked properly since then. The Star Inn, Regensburg, was close to the station. We had time for a good wander round the town. I wonder if the Danube always flows so fast? Or has there been a lot of rain?

A long day of travelling the next day (Thursday 9 June), and since the internet didn't work at the Star Inn, we decided to catch the early 6.22am train. Regensburg to Frankfurt; Frankfurt to Basel; Basel to Interlaken and then the last 30 minutes on the panorama train to Meiringen. Everything worked smoothly. The first two trains gave passengers a paper itinerary - it showed the connecting trains at each stop, WITH platform numbers! This made connections so much easier.

So the train travel went smoothly. A rest day. Put our feet up and enjoyed the view. Arrived at Meiringen in Switzerland at 15.37. The sun was shining.

The Danube is flowing fast after all the rain last week, with more this week! We've only had a couple of dry, clear days in Tirol, but they have been worth it. Love the phot of the first carriage!
